I drive one 3-4 days a week, and have been doing so for about 15 years. I teach pursuit driving, and push them very hard on the EVOC course. They have a heavy duty suspension, better computer, cooling, and brakes than a stock Crown Vic. Although I melted a tire valve stem on one of them by getting the brakes too hot while training. The 4.6 is a strong and reliable motor. The vehicles seem to start feeling a little worn overall after 50k or so city miles. If you are looking for a decent used one, I would go with an ex-highway patrol model. btw, they will do 50mph+ in reverse!
Don't buy any of these ones used:

Sorry for the hijack here, but there is also an EVOC course taught at camp Parks by Alameda County Sherriff's Dept., much closer to San Ramon.

Yes, Alameda County and Contra Costa County both offer civilian courses. The Co Co county one is at the Concord Airport and offers a Saturday class where you use their Crown Vics. Mostly skid control, accident avoidance, Etc. No pursuits or Code-3 though. Well worth the $199 or so it costs.

I drive a 2002 CVPI approx 14 days a month. I sometimes drive a 2003 CVPI. Both are great cars. Good ride, nice handling, and reliable.
2003 was the first year of rack and pinion steering and other front/rear suspension upgrades. The 03 handles better than the 02.
What I don't like on the 03: Ford added an unneeded(IMO) tachometer, which made the spedo SMALLER! On a POLICE CAR!
Also, the brake/gas pedal are too close, sometimes my boot hits the gas, as I brake.

I had a CVPI. It was ok as a daily. No complaints. Stops well, handles ok, has pleanty of room. FYI, mpgs are TERRIBLE. I averaged 12-14 city no matter how easy I was with the throttle. HWY was 18 mpgs at best. I tried everything, and could not get good figures out of it. I figured for those kind of fule mileage figures I should just have a truck, so I sold it and got a truck with no regrets.

I have a "last of the breed" '96 Caprice 9C1 as my DD. Unfortunately, the newest one is already 10yrs old, but as any LEO will tell you, they have it all over the CV's. Most have been beaten to death, though.

I have a 1999 and I love it! but it is true that they dont get the best gas mileage, I get 17 in the city and 18 on the highway. I have been considering getting a different DD but can't find anything I like better then the CVPI for the money.

Anybody have the Corvette/Camaro/Firebird/Mustang/Grand National interceptors?
The Corvette might be a promotional vehicle just done up to look like a police vehicle though. I know they've used the other cars.
Just wondering. We see the Caprice and Crown Vic's all the time. You don't see much of the others too often anymore.
