Default Hyundai ??? But What the Hell

Can the Pistons ('97 GL 4 banger) be removed without taking off the head? By just removing the pan only... I don't see how, but I'll ask anyway... Kids car has no compression in #2 & 70# in #3, 1 & 4 are Ok... I think the compression ring went south...

It can be done, but dropping a crank and rebuilding everything from under the car is a huge pain in the buttocks.

Might also be valves.

How are you going to get the pistons past the main webbing bulkheads? Have you ever done this?

My Vette has GLC emblems on it. They stand for Great Little Car.

My experience is with renault, fiat and alfa romeo 4 bangers but it shouldn't be too different, all are 4 cylinder in line dohc engines and all being as compact front wheel drive as they can be they are very similar in design and have partially overlapping bores and bulkheads like any compact engine design.

More likely valves or head gasket than rings, IMO.

Just change the rubber band, and drive off.

That's what I'm thinking it is and pulling a head is a lot easier.

You guys need to show a little more compassion. I mean after all, his kid's favorite squirrel just died.

I don't think so because...I should have said this first...it has a lot of blow by coming out the oil filler cap. That's why I think it's in the block (rings) and not the head...

Long story short...you'll find it a LOT easier to change the piston rings from the top, and while the head is off you can have it inspected and worked over if needed.

Unless you are doing a mercedes diesel. Someone had the idea of making the rods larger than the bore. Not one of their better ideas or did they ever have a better idea in the first place.

If it has that much blow by, it must have ventilated a piston.

How would you compress the rings to put the pistons back in from the bottom?

With duct tape which then also acts as a super special ring seal!
