Default This may be a really dumb 'Shelby' question

What does Carrol Shelby have to do with the GT500, other than the fact that his name is on the back panel? Did he have something to do with the design? Or the engine? Do they get assembled at his place in Vegas? Clever marketing schtick by Ford? All burning questions that need answering....

Maybe a GT500 owner can elaborate or correct me on this but I saw a thread over at SVTPerformance where a GT500 owner attempted to register his car with Shelby. He was refused due to the fact it is not a real Shelby, was not made at the Shelby plant in Arizona. It does seem odd that it carries the name but isn't a Shelby.

The cars are not built at a Shelby plant.
And certainly Ford is using the Shelby name to sell cars.
(can you blame them?)
But make no mistake about it Carroll Shelby is a real car guy.
His successful racing career is well documented.
Unfortunately it was cut short by a heart ailment..
The Ford GT40's managed by Carroll Shelby's Shelby American race team were the talk the racing world when they took on Ferrari @ the 24 hours in LeMans and kicked their asses. Finishing 1st,2nd and 3rd in 1966
A payback for Mr. Henry Ford II (his financier) for a Ferarri buyout deal with Enzo Ferrari gone south
Today in his mid eighties he indeed is still involved in the build process.
He signs off on most every major design consideration and he battles the bean counters for things like bigger tires on the new Shelby.
He also gets a lot of static for all the autographs/signatures he "sells" on his cars and memoriabilia. When in reality all the money he recieves goes to the Carroll Shelby Childrens Foundation. A great organization that benefits children.
I love all the great cars and I admire Mr. Shelby

I wasn't questioning the facts about the man. In fact, I'd give a kidney up for a big block Cobra. Was just wondering what he had to do with the new GT500.

It was the Ford GT40 that placed 1-2-3 in the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans.

My bad you are correct.
Henry Ford II did hire Carroll Shelby's race team "Shelby American" to manage the Gt 40 teams that won at Lemans in 66 and 67.

Not sure on 100% of the details, but there are a few hundred mustangs sitting at Las Vegas speedway getting some sort of treatment done.
I drive by there 2 times a day, way to and way from work, they are always shuffling cars around between the parking lot and the Shelby building.
Not a huge mustang fan so I have never inquired as to what they are doing...

Oh, all the cars are black or white. Theres an orange Cobra that sits out there on occasion too, not sure whats up with it...
