Owned a '69 Torino Formal roofline 428 SCJ Cobra, 428 SCJ w/C-6 auto. Ford gave a 5 year / 50K mile warranty on that car. It was a D.D. but still ran it at the strip. Stock out of the box it ran mid 14's. With nothing more than a set of 7" wrinkle wall slicks, it would run 13.5's all day long. Never lost to cars in my class, H/PS or H/SA. NEVER LOST. You have a 4100 pound car running 13.5's with a set of slicks. That is a performer.
My brother had a '69 Mustang Mach 1 with 428 SCJ coupled to a 4-speed Doug Nash Pro Box tranny. His was built up pretty good though. He ran in the 10's.
We laughed all the way to the bank on Thursday nights.

Your correct there Mustangs Cameros are pony cars if were talking old school as this thread implies. As time goes on the meanings tend to get blured (mostly do to the idiots writing for some of the car rags)
The new people read that tripe and take it as gospel.
The were a few Novas worthy of the title Muscle Car. Factory Novas with 350 HP were fast & then think Nikey & Yanko also. I had a friend with a 350 350 NOVA , its biggest problem was traction
I wrote what I did as my time on the streets/strip during the 60s in my own corner of the world.(AS THE OP ASKED FOR)

I was going to talk about how my chevelle used to spank this old man and his SCJ Torino but I don't want to offend the Ford camp. However, the only time I ended up behind a ford was a 351 boss in a Maverick or Comet. I forget which (the guy built a couple of each and finally he got one right.)

I lived the era, and
to bad back in the day both the car makers and buyers had it all wrong. My physics high school teacher taught us the simple rule of power to weight ratio and correct gearing. He drove a 1956 300SL Gull wing and raced all big blocks on the street, he never lost. I also remember two early muscle cars that were fast, the 413 Dodges and the 406 FE Fords long about 1962. Me I went with the not quite Cobra, a 67 289 hi-po and listened to my teacher and drove a Tiger.
