Default Audi TT & SL55AMG - do not underestimate these cars!

I went on a drive yesterday with two buddies - one had a 03 SL55AMG loaner (he works for MBZ), and the other a highly modded TT.

My C6 puts down 459HP, and I was working hard to keep up with the AMG (he swore he never had it floored). That car is very fast with oodles of torque. I wanted to drive it but he said "no" since it was going to auction soon.

The TT is fast as well, and goes to show how well lower powered-cars can be driven by a good driver. I drove it and while fast, it was nowhere near the power of the C6 - momentum is everything, but the car was very well balanced.

Neat to see and try different cars to learn about differing approaches to design.

I have an AMG E55. In a straight line/drag race, the E55 will smoke my C6 coupe and either of the cars you mentioned. But throw in some curves, and the C6 will crush all three of them.

Yep...I surprised many a performance car with my modded TT... amazing what a well built and tuned and boosted (21 psi) four banger can do>>

And I learned to respect Quattro...

Right, the SL is a bit of a porker and got a bit out of sorts over nasty pavement (he had the roll-bars deploy!).

We never did any true acceleration runs, but he was not able to pull my modded C6.

Regardless, I didn't think it would be that quick.

The Audi is really well balanced, and in tighter roads has an advantage in drivability of a HP beast like the C6.

The tendancy to understeer if the throttle is lifted in mid-corner takes some getting used to though!

I should add that I'm refering to stock cars, once they are modded, anything is possible. I'm sure a school bus could outrun my E55 with enough mods.

I've never owned a Benz so I can't comment on them but I've owned 2 A6 quattros (one V6, one V8). Like 'em or not, Audis are beautifully built and engineered cars. For a large sedan, my A6 4.2 V8 was a rocket. I can only imagine what the V10-powered S6 feels like.

I also own a TT with DSG and all wheel drive. I agree with the other posts that this car handles extremly well. The DSG works great. SHifts are very quick.

Don't know about the S6 but I would love to get behind the wheel of the R8.

That car looks like one badazz ****.

Yup..I agree...I had mine for 6.5 years...Just sold to make way for the C6. it is amazing what a 1.8 liter turbo and some tweeking can acomplish..
Mine was heavily modded and became the template for many to follow.
300hp on the stock turbo, and handling like a Gokart. Some of what I've learned modding this car will translate to my '08 C6 I'm sure...

I owned an Audi TT and it was in the shop more than my M5. I have lost respect for all German made cars. That's why I went the Corvette route.

Yeah, but it was not the fastest car at VIR when Car and Driver did their 'Lightning Lap'...

A friend and business associate from South Africa tooled us around Durban in his new AMG SL65. I don't know much about Mercedes as in depth as American cars, but HOLEY CRAP.

This car was fine. This guy races also - has a 650 hp 1400lb Porche twin turbo he races (and recently got to race on the SA Durban F1 track) ... so he knew how to drive and scared the crap out me LOL

Here is the bios on the car:

The most powerful production SL-Class model from Mercedes-Benz, the SL65 offers a 604-horsepower biturbo V-12 and every AMG race-engineered component available, including race-inspired Active Body Control (ABC) suspension, AMG-designed multicontour seats, and carbon fiber trim.

View SL65 AMG Specifications
MSRP$187,775*
EngineAMG-built biturbo 6.0L SOHC 36-valve V-12 engine
Net power604 hp @ 4,800 rpm
Net torque738 lb-ft @ 2,000 - 4,000 rpm

Quite the price tag, but an absolute poetic feat of engineering and refinement.

Its not the 4banger TT im worried about, but the V6 R32 Twin Turbo Audi TT from HPA Motorsport Im worried about. As with the SL55 AMG, He floored it.

wow, this thread came out at a perfect time! My friend (24 yr old, yeah he's a rich kid) owns a black 06 Mercede SL55. Two days ago, he finally brought it to work and let me seat in the passenger seat. He refused to let me drive it. Anyway, the interior of the vehicle was far better and sexier than C6 Vette. I told him to step on it and so he did. I did not feel the G-Force that we feel when we step on our Vettes...Anyway, he insisted that his car will burn a Vette in a herat beat.

So I got into my vette and decided to step on it little bit....He took off first but, MAN, my vette smoked his car and pulled about 10 cars length between us. You should have seen my friend's face through my rear view mirror...he had his mouth wide open with hint of a disappointment. I was not that impressed....but of course, his car was not an AMG....I'll bet that car will smoke my car "in a heart beat."

I don't know anything about TT, but I like the new one's...they look sexxy.

My wonder is why are people so greedy with letting others drive their cars... Anyone who is at least a decent friend and responsible and has experience with a faster than average car gets to drive mine. Obviously if they have a tendency to crash a lot of cars, or never driven stick, etc, they dont get to, but most of them aren't dumb like that. Also, No way they would be allowed to floor it and go at a high speed, cuz thats just far too dangerous... but whats the harm of some side street driving, just to make their day better?

I dont understand why someone with a bit more expensive car thinks theirs is better and only they can drive it. What would really pizz me off is if they expected to be able to drive the vette and not let you drive their car.

Thats not a real friend

His car was not an SL55 then. The SL55 has a supercharged V8, makes nearly 470hp, and will take any stock vette short of a c6 z06 from a roll. Are you sure he didn't have an sl 550?

The SL is what, $120-130k? I wouldn't feel too bad about that beating me. I could buy two Vettes for that. The Audi TT on the other hand...yikes.

Hrm... not what Car and Driver said. Am I missing something? The car described below is from a 2002 article, has the SL55 AMG changed much since then? Edit: I just checked an edmunds.com article about the 2007 version and the stats were even worse.

Heh, those stats aren't smoking any C6 that I know...
