Default Yellowed Headlight Covers

On my daughters Ford Taurus. It is to the point it is affecting light output at night. The covers are plastic I think. If this is just dirt / grime, it is very stubborn and not washing off.

I've not seen anything quite like this before. Has anyone else encountered this and if so what can I do, besides replacing the covers?

Thank you!

Wet sand them with 1000, 1500, then 2000. Polish them with Meguaires Plastx plastic polish.
