I believe the slowest car I have ever driven was a 1977 Peugeot 505D (diesel) which had a 0 to 60 mph time of around 27 seconds. It was just a slug on acceleration, but it did get about 28 mpg fuel economy, and it had a unique hydraulic suspension that just soaked up large potholes and bumps. Goofy controls (typically French) too - the French did as little as possible to make their cars user friendly for Americans at the time, which may account for the dearth of French cars in our marketplace.

The slowest car I ever owned would probably be a 1960 Studebaker Lark 6-cylinder automatic. It had the last old-design flathead 6 in 1960 and could hardly get out of its own way. We're talking 0 to 60 mph times on the order of 18 - 20 seconds. And to top it off, it only got around 17 mpg on average as an economy car. Not a good car.

1993 Geo Tracker. It was Fuchsia in color! All I could afford at the time. It was clean...had low miles...but no air...I scooped it up. It took me an hour to get to 60mph but I made it do what it do!!!

Actually, it would beat the C6......if all 4 tires were flat and I blew 7 of the 8 cyclinders!!!

I had a 1982 toyota 4x4 pickup that I put 33" tires on with a 5 inch suspension lift. I never changed the gears to accomodate the larger tires, and the poor little 4 banger really had to work at it. Top speed was 75mph, and I would guess that I could maybe go 0-60 in 15-20 seconds

Default Mercedes 220D

The slowest car for me was a Mercedes 220D. When stopped at a traffic light you had to floor the accelerator when the opposing light was amber so the car would go when your light turned green. There was about a 3 second delay before the car got moving. It wasn't too bad once it was going. There was no turbo on this car.

Studebaker??? I think I remember my Dad telling me stories about them in the old days.... did you have to put the crank in the front end to start it??? LOL

I drove a mid 80's Isuzu pickup... four cylinder with an automatic... I was also told that it had a bad valve.... I bought it used... the price was right $1000 and it took me back and forth to work and school.... i could get it up to 65 mph... but not much faster!!!

those were the days!!!

My first car was an 85 Mustang LX with the 2.2L carbureted 4cyl pumping out 88hp through a 4spd manual.

The 0-60 time was about 14 seconds and it would top out around 90. What a thrill to take it to 90! (speedo maxed at 85).

Also driven the "old" VW Beetle which prob took over 20 seconds.

I know what you mean about those old Peugeots. My 5th grade teacher had an old diesel wagon (think it was a 505 actually). I don't think the thing ever had enough room between stoplights and freeway exits/entrances to get up to 60.

The '65 Beetle I had in high school (no I'm not that old....it was quite used at the time). I think it had maybe 30 or 35HP.....with a PITA 6V electrical system to boot.

My '08 is a far cry from those days.

I think it's a toss-up between my '77 Pontiac Grand Prix with the very anemic 301 V8 (I didn't bother to check which engine it had before I bought it) and my '89 Volvo 740GL with its 114 hp I-4. The Volvo was a slug acceleration-wise but otherwise it was a fantastic car.

Back in the days of the "gas crisis" or "gas shortage" I went out and bought a diesel Rabbit (VW). Slow as molasses in winter.

Went to a SF Giants game one time at Candlestick. Me and three others. I turned the corner and stared at a quite steep hill. I backed up and took a running start from the bottom and could only make it up about 1/3 of the way. I asked my guests to disembark and then I backed down the hill, took another running start and made it up to the top with only me in the car. Me and that car were forever laughing stocks.

Now I can't wait for new diesels to come out (seriously) here in the US, especially in the small trucks and 4x4s. I'd love it if Audi would come out with a diesel R8 - that would be cool.

I have a 1947 Chevy pickup I use at camp to haul wood. She'll do nearly 50 flat out, downhill with a tailwind, and her 0-50 time can be timed with a sundial. But, she always starts and runs fine, even after winter storage (which consists of changing the oil, taking the battery out and throwing a tarp over the truck after parking it behind the shed). The deer have eaten most of the upholstery - don't ask me how they get the damned doors open, but they do. All three of my sons (now 25, 27 and 29) learned to drive a standard-shift vehicle on the fire trails, and dubbed her "The Thunderbolt Grease-Slapper". She's actually a pretty rare early '47 4-speed, and probably deserves to be restored . . . but she's not retired yet, she's still a work truck. I think we both like it that way.

Apparently he failed to tell you about the Avanti that ran 181 MPH at B-ville in 1963 with a 304 ci motor. It took 5 years and a 426 Hemi in a Cuda to beat that record.

1979 Camaro Rally Sport. It had a 130 hp 305 in it, with about a 2.42 rear end., the transmission was a th350 and the first to second shift was so mushy. It weighd about 3500 lbs. That car was such a pig.
