Default Toyota quality?

So much for Toyota quality!

WASHINGTON - Toyota Motor Corp. is recalling 539,500 Corolla and Matrix passenger cars in the United States because the bolts in the power window system can become loose and ultimately cause a window to shatter.

Toyota has had many recalls in the last few years as most manufactures have. We just don't expect it from them.

I wonder is this recall will also include the Pontiac Vibe. This car is essentially a re-skinned Matrix -- I have one. (Matrix, Vibe and Corolla are built on same Toyota platform.)

All Vibes are built at the GM-Toyota joint venture (NUMMI) plant in Freemont, CA. Oddly, if I remember correctly, all Matrix vehicles are built in Japan. But I think Corollas are built at NUMMI.

I believe when you compare the quality of vehicles now to the 70's and 80's...there is no significant quality issue. There will always be recalls and issues... Most are derived from vendor parts issues....

Who cares, Corolla Matrix shouldn't be discussed on a Corvette website.

Toyota cars are boring, borning...

Did GM ever recall C5s because of the column lock issue? How about the bad EBCMs, oil pressure sender units, fuel sender units, power window actuators, leaky diffs, etc, etc.

Just because a manufacturer recalls vehicles does not mean they are unreliable. It CAN mean that the manufacturer is taking care of its customers. I really enjoy my C5, but really, you can't compare GM to Toyota in terms of quality and reliability.

Not in my experience with two vettes and one camry.

Vettes combined experienced 20-30 problems, one got me stranded for 3 days once. Camry had none.

sucks for you. Cant really say Toyota is better quality just cause you got two GMs with problems tho. I can name numerous people with the opposite opinion after owning both.

Toyota has lead the reliability category for over a decade, that's not an opinion, it's fact. We can sit here and name all the people we know who've had problems with Toyota and it wouldn't make a difference in the world. There are consumer reports who monitor and keep track of all major failures from every manufacturer and annually Toyota has maintained it's lead with Mazda nipping at their heels. Give credit where credit is due. This is a debate that has been exhausted time and time again. the point is that GM is not in position to take the lead just yet, a a common goal that all manufaturers share. However that's not gonna hold me back from buying a vette, that's not the car's selling point. it's the performance, looks, and history that keeps me coming back.

Toyota Motor Corp (7203.T)(TM.N) and General Motors Corp (GM.N) are recalling more than 662,000 vehicles sold in the United States due to defects in power windows, the two companies said on Wednesday.

Toyota will recall 539,500 Corolla and Matrix vehicles for the 2003 and 2004 model years, it said in a statement.

GM said it would recall 122,598 Pontiac Vibe hatchbacks, which share the same platform with Toyota's Matrix and are built by GM in a joint venture with the Japanese automaker.

On vehicles equipped with power windows, the driver and front passenger glass bolts may loosen and cause the door glass to separate from the window regulator, Toyota said. Vehicles equipped with manual windows are not subject to the recall.

Toyota will notify vehicle owners by mail, beginning in late April. It advised owners to contact their local Toyota dealer for inspection and repairs.

Replacement of the driver and front passenger door glass bolts will be done at no charge, Toyota said.

How about we take a look on the JDpowers or CS ratings? Would that be an evidence sufficiently trustworthy for you?
