They added 40 hp and 20 lbs of torque over the 2008, and the WRX is 220 lbs lighter than the STI.
I've been thinking of trading my 2003 WRX in on a used C55, but maybe an new WRX would be a good substitute...

I think one of the magazines reported that during their test. Although not really quicker as I think the 0-60 times was 0.1 sec faster, but there's always variance due to testing.

I had on 04' WRX slightly modded and as much as I love the Corvette the WRX was more fun....especially in the snow (DUH!). I've seen several sources saying the 09' WRX is faster to 60 than the 09' STi and it is probably true...that does not necessarily make it a better performer than the STi. The much sturdier 6 speed transmission and better brakes are the big improvement of any STI over the cheaper WRX. I acutally prefer the WRX interior and gauges over the smurf blue seating and almost pinkish red gauges in the STi. The STi and Evo have priced themselves out of the performance car market. It is still based on the Impreza econobox platform, with a cheap cheap stereo, ultrathin paint, hard plastics, cheap switchgear and everything else you would expect in a sub 20K econobox only it goes fast and has AWD. For the same money I can get cars from 90% to beyond the performance of the Evo and STi with much much better styling, build quality and a tons of additional content including integrated Nav sound systems, heated leather seating, automatic headlamps, anti-theft features and on and on. Also check your insurance before you buy one, they can be quite high.....like the Mustang they are a favorite for teenagers to wrap around telephone poles and fly into ditches with.

I'm guessing the weight difference is between the hatch vs. the sedan?

Ahhh... not really. All of the reviews I've read have pointed out the stronger mid and high end acceleration. After 60, the STI is pulling away.
The 0-60 times are a bit of a mismatch because the shorter gearing on the STI requires 2 shifts to hit 60, which adds a quarter to a half second.
That's not even mentioning the improved suspension and AWD system. So 0-60 the WRX is as fast as the STI, but in all other aspects, the STI is the better performing car. And it will probably be much quicker around a track.
But the WRX is a smoking deal. I'd seriously consider it over the STI as a DD.

From our preview drive, it seems the WRX is now exactly what we wanted it to be when the new generation debuted last year. The steering gives more feedback, and the handling responses are sharper. Despite the stiffer springs, the ride is still compliant, only now it feels more buttoned down to the road. The engine power is linear once the turbo boost starts to kick in, a sharp contrast to the peaky nature of the STI and far more comfortable for everyday driving.

Reading that article it says the WRX is faster through the 1/4 mile too! Are the WRX trannies still made of glass and balsa wood? Are they still open diffs front and rear?

Turbo air has a tendency to run hot. By design the intercooler sits right on top of the intake, rather then down in front of the radiator like most normal turbo cars.
