What would you buy?

+1 People who do not have much road course time always have a hard time with the Miata thing. Trust me, I watched a guy in a Viper just a few weeks ago doing every thing he could to stay with a NA miata around Barbers. This is from a guy who ownes a modified GTS and a C6. I have owned a buch of sports cars and still have 6 in the garage. The Miata would be one of the last to go.
Oh, and the Solstice is no competition.

Wow... pure ignorance. Now Miatas are Viper killers? The Solstice GXP is no competition? I've smoked plenty of Miatas on road courses in my old Cobalt SS, and it wasn't just the extra power that got me by them, Cobalts can hang with them in the turns too. Miatas do handle well and I'm sure they're fun to drive, but stop making yourself look silly. This is why people start rolling their eyes when Miata fanboys open their mouths!
Below are the lap times from Car & Driver's 2006 "Lightning Lap" track day at VIR. Look at the lap times. Same drivers, same day, same track. The Miata is LAST. Cobalt beat it by 9 seconds, Solstice by 14, Viper by 28. I guess that guy you saw in the Viper that couldn't keep up with the Miata wasn't around that day?

Miatas generally do well at very small, technical tracks. They get slaughtered on longer tracks with higher speeds. I think that's the racing he was referring to.

Calm down.
I never said they were viper killers. On small tracks and AutoX they are hell to run with though. I have been there. Barbers is small and there is just not that many places to use the HP. VIR is another story. The tracks we have around here just don't have the size to make use of the heavy high HP cars. Most track days here have more Miatas than all other cars combined.
You want a fast $5000 trak day/AutoX car you buy a NA Miata with a turbo, suspension and trimmings. Like a low dollar Foxbody for drag racing it is hard to beat for the money.
The Cobalt SS is a great little car even for a FWD set up. I would buy one over a Solstice anyday.
A picture of the two in street trim after cleaning them up the other day.

Nice cars by the way. The Viper is beautiful.

Thanks, The Viper is a looker for sure. I wanted to love the Solstice GXP. As I looked at the early pictures, I thought this is the Miata they should have built with the MSM. After a test drive though, it just was not in the ballpark.
