VW Dealership is smoking something...
The VW dealership was asked what a filter, gasket and pan fluid change would cost on my 99 Golf. I asked because I cant get a straight answer on the fluid etc that goes in it, and it needs a tool to check temp prior to oddball way of checking fluid.
Here is what they wanted, for the items asked plus labor.
"To answer your service question, VW performs a trans service. They replace the trans pan gasket, the strainer (filter), they remove the fluid from the pan and then refill the trans. Parts and labor est. Would be $499.95+tax. We would need to order the parts and would take about a week to arrive."

Here is a simple write up on how to do it.
There is a PDF file at the beginning of this write up

Safety Car
Why pay for something that you can do yourself for a whole lot cheaper. $500 is way tooooooo much for a filter/fluid change. I don't let other people touch my car because they might not do something right and later on down the road it will end up costing much more.
