I bought a Corvette Convertible. I could care less what Ford develops for their mustang. If I wanted a mustang I would have bought one. My Vert has 436 hp and that is plenty for me.

As long as it keeps the HP race going, I don't care who and what keeps making more and more HP!
If I'd have wanted a Mustang/SRT8/Z06/diesel pickup with a tune or any other thing that's fast, I'd have bought it...

Wish my 2000 Mustang GT came with this motor. However, na wise, there's not much left on the table. A fully loaded GT costs @38K,iirc. Not much of a deal considering my '08 was only a few grand more. Also, have you seen that new tranny? 5th gear is 1:1 and first is so low(because of a lack of low end torque) that the tranny's torque rating is lower than peak output.

Yes, the Ford engines are good and the new eco boost engines are impressive. The sad thing is the cars they have to put them in. The Mustang is a nice car. However, it is more of a teen & female car then its competitors the awesome Challenger & Camaro.

In addition, since:
HP = RPM x TQ / 5252, and the smaller displacement motor has to rev higher to achieve HP (which is the reason for the 4 valve heads - they do breath better), the smaller engine has less TQ on the bottom end.
TQ on the bottom end is what pleases the soul.
HOWEVER, I still like Ford. If they didn't make Chevy's - I'd buy a Ford. I do like the way the new mustangs look. The problem is, Ford went the wrong way when they developed the modular engine, now they're stuck with it. The only way to get big HP out of it is to put 4 valve heads or a blower on it.

Big deal. That 412 HP engine sits in a two ton Mustang. My 436 HP LS3 sits in my 3300 lb Corvette. Nuff said!

Really now, who has more money, Ford and the Ford family or GM and the taxpaying citizens of the great United States of America (GM's owner)?

I agree with some of you on both sides of the fence. First of all, I wouldn't understand why anyone here would feel "threatened" by the new Ford engine. It can't compete with an LS motor especially in the heavy Mustang. Ford's motors are impressive to look at and put down good numbers when using forced induction. The new 5.0 seems like a step in the right direction by producing a N/A motor and not relying on a blower to get their numbers up. I say good job, Ford, and keep forcing our guys to answer with better products as well.

Think Ford did a very nice job with their new 5.0 V-8 and 3.7 V-6 engine's. Top line HP/litre without costly DI, and mostly on regular fuel. 5.4 and DI version's are in the work's, so watch out. I'm not a Ford vs Chevy guy, just like cool performance cars, and own a Vette as it's really in a league of it's own. Mustang's are cool too, but compete in a different market. Hard to argue the Vette's low weight, big cube torque on the street, though. Ford's engine's have been a bit lacking up until now, but with the new Mustang engine's and a world class pickup truck Diesel introduced, they're onto something. If they could cut about 700 lbs of fat for their next F-150 design, they'd really be rollin'.

I believe this thread is about Fords new engine and not the Mustang. Ford is just doing now what GM will be doing in a few years. Change happens guys, weither you like it or not, and when it happens to the vehicles we all love, it is usually a good thing in the long run.

Ford makes some great engines and that cannot be denied. However, GM makes some incredible engines which also cannot be denied.

Change is good - that what got us the C5 and C6.
LS3 with DI is the way to go

Change or no change I will happily take the 556 HP Caddy/Camaro engine, LS3, LS7, or the Ford beater for the next 20 years the LS9 over any of Fords engines now.

It won't fit in the present C6 Corvette - maybe. I don't think you want to be telling any engineer that something can't be done. Any major engine redesign for the Corvette will most likely come with the next generation. That is not to say a 5.5L will come sooner, but if built on the same LS platform, that is not a major redesign.

I like it. I looked at the car at the Chicago Auto Show. Nice interior. nice exterior style
I am into American muscle cars, not just one brand. Love em all. I plan on adding one to the stable.

I'd assume current Camaro owners are the ones who would feel threatened by the 5.0 upgrade. Car mags have already been claiming the current stang GT outdoes the current camaro just imagine what they will say with that much more power on tap. And yes I know car mags aren't the final word on how things are but when they all outrank the camaro with the gt it says something. Somebody mentioned the Z28 against the new GT but isnt the Z28 basically the GT500's competitor?
A final note, it is nice to see power still on the increase in different models. it seemed we were about to be done and headed for a pathetic period like the 80's.

Just for the record: The Mustang GT's curb weight is 3401 lbs and the Shelby GT500's curb weight is 3920 lbs.
