BMW question
My wife's aunt and uncle have a 2001 BMW 325xi. Low mileage, not driven hard at all. Two years ago, they had it into an independent shop that I trust, for a repair to the A/C system, and while it was there, its annual state mandated inspection.
I get a call from the shop regarding the safety inspection, the car had a broken front spring, which of course, had to be replaced to pass inspection. Two days ago, the rear window regulator failed, so the car went in today to get that fixed. Since the inspection is due in October, we decided to have it done while the car was there, even though it was a month early. I get a call from the dealer, this time a rear spring is broken!
Has anybody here had any experience like this?? I find it difficult to think a car with 40,000 miles, that never has more than two people and a couple bags of groceries in it, should be breaking springs. The service advisor told me that while he was in the dealer's Japanese car division, he never saw this problem, but since he's been in their Benz and Bimmer store, he sees it somewhat regularily.....

The 01 3-series BMWs had numerous issues with the following:
Engine cooling
Climate system
Suspension
Power equipment
This is why I recommend that anyone who buys a German car out of warranty should have reserve cash on hand for inevitable repairs.

Daughter had a 01 330i, no problems at all. Finally got totaled (not her fault) but had over 106K on it by then.
As for the springs breaking, Bimmerfest had a few discussions on this.

Thanks, guys!
I imagine that living in/driving in the northeast, where road salt is a normal winter road clearing procedure, doesn't help the situation either.
As one poster on "bimmerfest" said, a good set of aftermarket coils goes for $3-400, so it's a real "ripoff" when the dealer want $600 to install just 2 rears.... I didn't know about this beforehand, so I couldn't do the swap for them.
