looking for a small sports car.
I am looking for a fun car to drive other than my 65 Corvette coupe. I want a Fiat spider, Triumph TR4 or 6 or even a spitfire. Not looking for a project car or restored car but a driver mechanically sound with no cancer type rust. Paint can be bad, interior can need some freshing up, but no major issues. Would like a dry climate car if possible.

Are you retired, bored, or otherwise unfulfilled because your 65 C2 is running well?
Well then, a Fiat, Triumph, MG, or Jaguar would be the perfect car! Between leaky gaskets, malfunctioning carburators, and ozone-eaten rubber parts, you'll be sure to spend every waking hour on fixing something.
My advice: Get a 1999 MX5 and be done with it. It is light-years better than any car mentioned, while being super-reliable at the same time. It is truly a blast to drive - like go-cart for the street.

The 1999 and 2000's had bad seats. Try a 2001 and up for a little better car. My favorite is the old 1994 R package but it is not to everyones liking. The new NC's with the power hard tops are the cats ***.

Actually, I prefer the 04-05 Mazdaspeed MX5s with 178 HP and 17-inch lightweight RacingHart wheels/Bilstein shocks, etc. but they are out of his price range.
Even the 01s are in the range of $7000+ for a lower mileage one.
However, you can find some of 1999s for $4000 - $5000 that are in good shape.

For a guy who lives in San Diego and does not have to worry about snow I would suggest a different tire than the Conti Extreme (they dont actually make them any more either) since you dont have to deal with inclimate weather all that much. A true Summer tire will be much better than a performance all season.
I currently have Conti Extremes on my TL-S, they are a great 3 season tire here in the midwest, I do run specific winter tires for the snow season here though.

MVR, take a look:

This doesn't look like an all-season tire to me!

Below is the tire I was talking about:

This tire is being phased out and replaced with the DWS

Believe me, I've been putting up with wimpy all-season 15-inch tires for the last 13 years and I'm ready for some higher-performance "shoes". That's why I'm going with the Konig Brite Lite wheels. Even after plus-sizing to 16-inch, each tire/wheel combo will weigh 3 lbs less than the OEM wheel/tire combo. 15 lbs for a cast aluminum 16-inch wheel that costs $108 is very good.
Of course, (in getting back to the original topic) I would love to have a MS MX5 to replace the MX6 but I may have to wait a while. I guess that's one of the nice things about living here - no need for a harsh weather vehicle, just one that I can take places where I wouldn't take the C5.

Ken.... Im sorry as I kind of went off topic here. I also think the Miata is the way to go for a small rag top sports car, I know its not on your list but its going to deliver the most bang for the buck in your price range as well as offer the greatest level of reliability.
