I guess it all depends. If your definition of performance begins and ends at the drag strip (which unfortunately for most vette owners it does) then yes this will be a big problem... but then the vette was never designed to be a drag racer. However, if you take both cars to a REAL track, then the stang won't stand a chance against a Z06/ZR1.

What I don't get about Ford is, why would they put such a nice engine in such a $@^% car?!

Rumors were that the new GT500 was dipping down into the low 7:30s range during testing with the 2013 at the ring, so yes, that would prove to be quite the problem lol... a few suspension mods and some tires and they'll be right there with the Z06, and 4 seats to boot! Ford is doing everything right at the moment, chevy needs to keep the competition going with the new c7

Which makes it all the more impressive when it excels so well (and it does) at the drag strip.

The drag strip is A REAL TRACK as well, I believe the guys trapping over 150-175mph in a mere 8 or 9 second time span will also agree.

As for the Mustang, the upcoming GT500 will be making A LOT of power (as does the current one) but they are quite heavy and traction is a bit of an issue on the stock tires as well. Even a base LS3 manual will give it a good fight but a Z06 (or especially a ZR1) will have little to worry about in my opinion.

Totally subjective. "IF", perhaps, your idea of a nice/better car is a Corvette (you pick the model...any model - makes no difference), then I challenge you to go to your local Ford House and test drive an '11+ 5.0 GT, Boss 302 or LS and/or a new GT500 and please report back with an honest opinion. Please do remember that the Mustang is a pony car in comparison to a sports car. That said, considering the Mustang was NEVER made to compete with the Corvette and yet already is in both straight line acceleration and corner carving, speaks volumes. The build quality is also (arguably/subjectively) markedly better than that of any Corvette ever mass produced...!

To answer the OP's question - YES, this new Shelby WILL absolutely be a problem for the Vette, C6Z included. More attention than EVER has been paid to not only the power plant, but the car's ability to get its power to the ground and maintain a predicable and steady track around a road course. If in fact the reports of 650 hp prove true, it'll be a MONSTER!

Truth be told, Ford has been doing their homework. They have made NO BEANS about their intent to lead the (Big 3) pack in model to model comparos, be it in build quality, fit & finish &/or performance aspects.... As has been stated numerous times in the past several years, it is a GOOD time to be American automobile enthusiast....!

Flame suit on...!

The GT500 was meant to compete with the ZL1 and challenger, not the C6Z/ZR1 or any other vette. I respect all of the above cars because I'm a car guy, not an ignorant brand loyalist! Apparently, 50k+ spent on a vette gives one a higher status then 50k+ spent on "just a mustang".

I'm sure it will be a great looking and sounding car and be a lot of fun to drive. Everything does not have to be about pure speed as in most cases of normal driving, you don't dare go that fast anyway for fear of getting busted. I've had Corvettes since 1966 and still have my first one. I came very close to buying a 2011 Cobra last summer. It was a fun car to drive with primitive performance. Yes my Z is quicker but does not have that raw feeling the Cobra did. Performance cars are great these days. I test drove a 392 Challenger on Saturday. Very nice and really hot looking and running, plus a back seat. I did not care for the big "392" emblem on the seats, but it may be in my garage by Friday. Next to the Z of course.

First, it is a beautiful car in terms of styling, I prefer it over the ZL1 in this regard.

However, Ford is notorious for putting big HP engines in stangs, and save for the Boss/Laguna few have ever lapped a track or layed down a decent 1/4. The live rear axle and curb weight wont help, but lets wait and see. It will probably be close or even just ahead of the ZL1 ring time, but if they don't spend the right amount of time on areodynamics, they'll never beat it with similar specs.

Next is cost, $60,000? Wow, that is pushing it for a mustang. Im guessing it will sticker just over the ZL1, but that detracts from the value in my opinion.

OP- Thanks for posting. That is a cool freaking car.

I want one!

I also want a ZR1 !

What is interesting is the 200mph thing, because I had a very strong supercharged Mustang Bullitt with a Ford SVT brakes and suspension, and that thing was scary at anything over 130 MPH.

Being a car guy - like most of us here, I am pumped up by the Pony car "wars" going on right now at GM, Chrysler and Ford.

Cool stuff!

Having owned at GT500 with 658 rwhp and 325 street tires........no.......it doesn't hook with 500 hp, nevermind 700 plus. Drive around with DR's, no thanks....." watch out, a few rains drops " Slip sliding away into a ditch.

Every time I read threads like this I wonder how the OP could have missed the fact that GM builds a 638 hp Corvette already.

Oh, I forgot, you want GM to build a 650 hp Corvette AND cost the same as a Mustang. My bad

Have you driven a 2011+ GT or Shelby? I have, and let me tell you that being a Mustang is pretty good nowadays. It's good to see the kind of effort Ford is putting into the Mustang line.

It's a Ford, enough said.

The only time Ill probably see one is while I'm getting my F150 serviced and they pass one another, which will be quite often.
