Default Commuter - Volvo or Saab ?

Looking for a 4cyl car under $5K and these cars come up from 2001 to 2004 as reliable on Edmunds. Seeing some around 100K miles on CL.

Opinions ?

Why you just looking at Swedes?
Didnt Saab recently go belly up? Would that affect parts/service down the road?

Those just seem to be the best bang for the buck I've seen so far.

For under $5K, your best bet is a Mazda Protege, maybe even a Mazdaspeed Protege (turbo). If maintained, it'll be more reliable than the aforementioned cars and will be MUCH more fun to drive, ESPECIALLY the ES or MSP models.

Here's a good example for you:

I'd look for an older well kept Integra for that price.

Thanks for the input, I hadn't seen or considered those.

That would probably be a good but I need a sedan to use with the family also.

My daughter has one and I enjoy driving it when I can. It's been rock solid reliable. The one in the link looks like it was well cared for.

My dad was a mechanic for many years. The only car he has ever universally considered a complete POS was a Saab. Every Saab. Told me if I ever bought one, he would never help me fix it.
