Who switch to another car and is satisfied?
Hello All,
I sold my '03 Z06 with the intention of buying a leftover C6 GS. My wife and I had a long talk and are considering starting a family earlier than planned .
So I decided to open up the shopping list to sporty sedans.
I have driven a
M6 CTS-V (2010)
Auto CTS-V (2010)
SMG BMW M5 (2009)
I have to say I have been pretty dissapointed. I think I have been spoiled by the lightweight chassis and torqy V8 in the C5Z.
Right now I honestly feel like the heavy sedans are just imposters.
So have any of you made the switch and been satisfied with your decision?
Any pointers on other cars to look into?
Thanks!
-Nick

The G8 GXP or that new SS Sedan are probably going to be the closest things you'll get to a 4 door Vette, but you will lose out a lot on it. You're comparing something that it built with the explicit purpose of being fast to something that is build to carry about people and then worked over to be fast.

well, I went from a 2003 SVT Cobra (curb weight 3665 lbs) with approx 450 hp to the ground to a 2012 Ram 2500 turbo diesel 4x4 manual tranny (curb weight 7300 lbs) with about 320 hp to the ground.. yes I miss the acceleration of the Cobra, but all in all, I'm more satisfied with the pickup than the car.

I shifted from C5 to 996 and never looked back. I now have 996TT and it feels like the car I could grow old with. At some point I thought about shifting to 997TT but then decided not to. I'm so happy with that car so why try my luck somewhere else.

I know it's not glamorous and not a sedan, but a turbo Subaru Forester makes a quick all purpose family car. With slight mods it can even be a fun track/autocross car and still hall the family on icy winter roads. Plus, it sits up high enough to keep the family safe. I've owned several turbo Subarus over the years and they were great, but now that my kids are all grown and gone, I have both a Corvette and a Porsche.

When I sold my last C6, I opted for a loaded 2500 crew cab 4x4 with Duramax/Allison 6 speed. Added a tuner and was running at 450HP. It wasn't a C6, but it would move pretty well for a HD truck...and would carry 5 people, tow anything, and got 21-22 mpg. Eventually sold that, but it was a great truck, and very satisfying to drive. That was several years ago. I missed my C6 a lot, so ended up buying another one recently (2008 coupe). Good luck to you. Children are a blessing. I have 5 from 2 to 15 yrs old.
Edit: Did I mention that the truck had something like 800 ft-lb of torque? Don't recall exact numbers anymore. Been too long.

I like Porsches a lot too, but the poster wants something for the upcoming family and the back seats in 911s are really not for humans.

Melting Slicks
Many Corvette owners on this forum have either added a current-generation CTS-V to the stable, or sold their Corvette altogether in favor for one. I haven't seen a single one regret their decision yet. That is the closest you will never come to a 4-door Corvette.

Cts v is awesome. That ll run right with your c5 z06 at the track. In fact it'll run the same 7.58 at the "ring"
Moved from a 485 hp modded c5 z06 to a c6 ls3 z51 m6 and it's a cool transition. With only one child it works for me. I have driven the cts v extensively both on the street and quite a few times on the track....it's awesome.
I'd strongly suggest the 2010 cts v in manual or automatic....it's an amazing vehicle.
Buy American with confidence your children won't end up in the poor house if you have an out of warranty repair...
In fact..buy a cts v and get an extended gmpp warranty from one of the forum vendors...then track it.
Runs really really well at the track....
Fwiw. With only one baby on the way...your good in a vette till the second comes along if that's WHAT YOU WANT....
just remember...happy wife...happy life.
The CTS V is awesome...equal to a four door vette and lends itself to a better gentlemens sports luxury GT....
CTS V GETS MY VOTE.
Hammer one once and you'll agree.
Good luck with the new family......or buy the preowned vette and sell it when your b@Los turn blue...( kidding of course) when it doesn't work for you any longer...the depreciation will be minimal

Safety Car
I just picked up a 2013 Audi S4, it is the dual clutch S-Tronic trans and supercharged 3.0 V6. While not as fast as the CTS-V it delivers very nice performance, is AWD and the build quality is phenominal. I am also very impressed with the S-Tronic trans, its a leaps and bounds difference from a typical "slushbox" torque converter automatic.
I strongly considered getting a CTS-V but I like to have one car in my stable that gets halfway decent mileage (high teens city and mid 20's highway is what I consider decent). The CTS-V isnt a whole lot better than my H2....LOL. The performace is absolutely awesome but I was looking for more of a total package for a car that will see daily duty. Also with Chicagoland winters the AWD was a bonus..... I run winter tires but AWD vs. RWD is no comparison.

My advice? Have both if you can. I still have my C5, a 2700 lb MX6 GT boosted with lots of torgue, and an MX5 PRHT that weighs in at 2600 lbs. I am a BIG fan of light vehicles. My wife's RX400h, which weighs about 4600 lbs, is a great vacation with the kids vehicle and commuter for her, but I could not get myself to drive a super-quiet, disconnected-steering type vehicle to go to work and the gym. The quieter the car, the sleepier I get. Using massive power to wake me up would be inviting multiple traffic tickets, so my daily rides do make some noise and (with the exception of the C5) connect me to the road in a very good way.
In fact, Car & Driver editors are lamenting the proliferation of electric steering, which inevitably loses its transfer of road feel. BMWs, Audis, Mercedes, Caddies - they all drifting into the comfortably numb zone. I may go for this when I'm 70, but for now, lightness and road feel is my preference.
Again, though, if you can have at least one light vehicle, do it. My MX-5 is the most fun car I have ever driven, even with its 175 HP.

Im most likely about to be burned at the stake but Im throwing it out there anyways. I moved to Washington a few years back and hid my metal child away from the elements until summer came around. So right now my daily driver is a 1993 Mitsubishi 3000 GT
VR-4. COMPLETELY other realm (import, AWD, TT) but all in all its actually a fun lil car.

Love my DD, a 2009 Infiniti FX35 crossover built on the Nissan 370Z chassis. Drives like a sports car with all the advantages of an AWD SUV. It even sounds great!
I plan on trading up to a FX50s, 390 HP V8. 5 second 0 to 60.
File pics of the FX50s........
