Help Please!
I've been trying to help another forum member with a bad chatter when his clutch engages. The vehicle is a 1965 Ford Econoline, 6cyl, 3 on the tree, Navy van. Actually it's a van, with a pickup rear bed. He has owned the van for 6 mos, and the problem just started about a month ago.......so obviously, something has failed. By the way, the chatter only happens when taking off in first gear and goes away as soon as the van gets moving.......typical symptoms of a warped flywheel, or pressure plate. Here's what has been done, with no results. Replaced motor and tranny mounts, resurfaced flywheel, new TO bearing and pilot bushing, tried 2 new clutches. replaced front and rear Ujoints, checked tranny input shaft......no excessive play. However, with the rear wheels off the ground, and the tranny in neutral, you can rotate by hand the drive wheel a full 2", before the drive shaft moves. I'm certainly not a differential expert, but that seems excessive to me. It seems to me something like 1/4" of play would seem more normal. Any thoughts or suggestions?
