I Went to the Dark Side
I was really looking forward to seeing the gorgeous C7 in person in hopes I could convince my wife to give up her prejudice against Corvettes, but that isn't going to happen. We saw a very pretty Cayman in red over beige that she really liked so I took her to our local Porsche dealer to see if it would be a good fit for me (I'm broad in the beam and snug sports car seats are often uncomfortable). The Cayman is a great car but not for my 6'1" 260 lb frame. She also "approved" of the Carrera so what started out to be an $85K potential purchase turned into a $119,500 purchase.
For that money you get a car that's equivalent to the 2014 C7 Coupe except it costs about $45K more! The only edge the Carrera S has over the C7 (besides the snob appeal) is their amazing PDK transmission with launch control that gets the svelte 3120-pound car to 60 in 3.9 seconds.
I've never been a Porsche fan but their product line nowadays is very attractive and their interiors are no longer the cold, Teutonic atmosphere they once were but are now very warm and luxurious. Build quality is obviously excellent and there's no arguing that the 911 is a world class icon. I'm very excited that I ordered my car today for September delivery and just wanted to share this experience with others on this forum who share my love of the new Stingray and to let you know that the C7 is an amazing value.
The best part is that for once my wife is actually excited about a sports car that I want and is looking forward to driving it herself, something I couldn't expect with the Stingray because of her preconceived prejudice against the brand. She drove my C6 once and actually locked herself inside the car and almost roasted in the hot Florida sun, so she swore she'd never drive it again, and she never did.
I'm still excited about the C7 but getting a Carrera S is a pretty good consolation prize!
Auf Wiedersehen!

Seriously...if Corvette wants to compete with Porsche, they MUST get a solid DCT tranny in the next 2 years. There is just too large a pool of potential buyers who will turn off to the Corvette without it and move toward cars that do it well.
Add to that you see that chicks don't wear the right shoes to drive a manual so they whine and make their gutless husbands get a car they can shift. No offense!

The 911 S is a wonderful car. I also looked at getting a 2014 model but in Canada I just can't justify the outrageous price at this time. The PDK transmission is a solid piece of engineering and the lack of this in the new C7 is what has steered me away from the 2014 model. If 2015 brings the same antique transmission I may be joining you.

Wait, so your wife vetoed the purchase of a C7, but she's OK with spending an extra $50K on a Porsche? WTF? Why??? If it was for family, practicality, or budget reasons, I could understand the wife having her way, but in this case it sounds like you're just throwing in the towel for no good reason... That is unless she is just as into sports cars as you are, and for some strange reason, she just likes the Porsche better than the Corvette.
If you can't defend yourself adequately here, I'm afraid I'm going to have to revoke your man card.

Congrats on your decision. If the wife ain't happy, you can't be happy! I considered a used Porsche some years back, but even used Ps are beyond my ability to pay. I agree they're great cars and there's something about snobbery that sometimes makes it appealing. At any rate, when you get tired of it, there's always a Corvette available.

For that kind of money I would have picked up a 2013 ZR1 and put about $15K in my pocket. Also, I could have had it now and driven it all summer and it will put any Porsche #'s to shame.
That's just me though.
And yes, the Porsche is a fantastic car.

Not to berate the Carrera S but for $15k more you could have had a GT3...which for all intents and purposes blows pretty much every Corvette ever made out of the water. I can understand if that 15k would have been over your personal tipping point but if I was looking at spending 115k in the first place I could manage the wiggle room for the awe inspiring GT3...
Also a small gripe, is anyone else getting sick and tired of the rendered pictures on dealer sites for their galleries...if i want to see what the car looks like in a video game I'll buy a $60 game. I want to see what these cars look like in actual metal and plastic not these too perfect renderings with fake lighting.

$119k is a lot of money but it is a lot of car.
Luckily we have a lot of choices of what we can spend our money on. Best of luck on the decision. I'm sure everyone will love it.
