Default Friend buys the "Anti-Corvette"

The day before I planned to call my friend to show him my new 2013 Grand Sport he called to tell me he bought a new car.

He is a serious car guy, so I figured he bought some Porsche Turbo or Aston Martin. Instead he drives over in a silver 4 door sedan . . . a Tesla (S Model). For those not familiar this is a fully electric vehicle. Tells me it is now his favorite car and one of the fastest cars he's owned.

His car is the top model and is 400 hp, 5000 lbs, $108k, and rides on 21 " wheels. Inside the car is one video screen where the gauges should be and what looks like a huge touchscreen laptop or iPad mounted on its side in the center stack. Everything is controlled from the center touch screen. There are no buttons or switches. Additionally, the entire internet is available on that display.

There is a $7500 tax credit for buying the car, but he paid MSRP.

The car is completely silent when turned on. Welcome to the future.

Think I can take him in my C6 ?

Craig

They are nice but for $108k you can get a lot more gas powered car for the money. Also with proven technology.

Nope, he won't be faster.

I live in the Land of Tesla. SF Bay Area. I see more Tesla's than toyota corolla's or Honda Civic's around here.

I had a Tesla try to have a spirited drive by, under the speed limit ofcourse, although I was surprised at how fast it was, it didn't have a chance.

At the next light, he tried it again. Again, right up to the speed limit, his spirited *cough* launch didn't have a snowball's chance in hell.

You can sleep with a light heart tonight.

I test drove the Tesla S top model (85kw battery performance model) last Tuesday evening. Numbers say 4.2 sec. It felt like 4.2 sec car but the darn thing is scary quite. Now I drive a 4.0 sec car and I actually have done a bit better in it after some simple mods. You have a 3.95 sec car or better, and in real world, it is better. Sleep tight with your perma-grin.

And folks, again we are comparing apples and oranges.

A tesla won't be in my future and I wouldn't consider it an "anti-Corvette." In fact, I wouldn't consider it at all beyond a passing curiosity. If your friend is happy with his choice that's great. Enjoy your Corvette!

I'm a technology guy. I design, and build my own computers, home theaters systems, etc. Love muscle cars & Corvettes. Yet, it's strange that I have absolutely no interest in the Tesla what-so-ever! Or, any other electric car for that matter. If I won it in a raffle, I'd sell it immediately, if not sooner.

Cool car! Now all it needs is a road with a slot between two copper strips...

A friend has one (actually 3 - 1 roadster and 2 model S's). I've driven both models and the S with the performance package is a seriously quick car. Gets close to 275 miles per charge in everyday driving. Very hitech and well built. Thinking of leasing one for my DD in a year or two after the charging station infrastructure is expanded. Test drive one. I think you'll like it. To the OP, you'll probably take him, but not by much.

I also know someone who has the Tesla S. I think it's a beautiful luxury sedan, and obviously very high-tech etc.
b-t-w, the rear brakes have two calipers on each rotor (one caliper on each front rotor).

But for any all-electric vehicle, the limited driving range prevents them from being practical. Several hours to
fully re-charge and you need to interrupt your journey. Takes 10 mins. or so to re-fuel the gasoline or diesel.

My neighbor is a plastic surgeon and just bought one. He pulled into my driveway and commented that he loved my 'Vette, but I wasn't allowed to have the nicest ride in the enclave. Silly bastard. Very sweet cars though.

Tesla is way nicer than a corvette. It's just not faster, but it is not meant to be.

Agreed, as did the Dr. And I during our quick exchange. My Tesla stock has been doing rather well. Love their willingness to break the mold and push the tech.
