Porsche 718 or Corvette
#21
I own a 2015 Corvette C7 and a 2014 Cayman 981. Both cars are extremely nice. I own the Cayman Coupe, not a Boxster convertible. I think I can provide a very good objective view as a duel owner.
Certainly the C7 has much more horsepower than the Cayman 718. I will say however, my Cayman 981 handles so much better that the C7. The Cayman is very roomy on the inside, and telemetry is very good to excellent as well as the German PDK auto transmission.
The telemetry and dash of the C7 is quite impressive. The sound system in the Cayman is fantastic. The exterior lines are very smooth and paint quality is superior to the Corvette. The interior seating is extremely comfortable and not confined like the Corvette C7.
I am not sure what the 718 will run in price, but will say adding a
turbocharged engine to the new 718 will be quite a thrill for any driver.
As for style, Porsche keeps the image they have always possessed and have updated the look well over the many years of Porsche history. Porsche has a great reputation. They always have. The Corvette C7 looks more like an Italian sports car, while the Porsche has ultra clean smooth lines and provides a very classy sports car look.
Don't let any Corvette C7 owners knock you around or degrade the idea or thought of owning a Porsche Cayman 718. These are both great cars with certainly different driving experiences.
I am not sure what the price point will be on the new 718, but would suggest you take one out on a test drive.
I am proud to own both sports cars, that provides a great choice of what to drive and when.

The Porsche engine problem is related to the 911 GT3 and Porsche has acknowledged the problem and are REPLACING the engine(s) in these cars.
Porsche has clearly identified the problem and is taking action. What more would you want them to do?

Isn't the 718 a turbo 4?

Please follow me to posting timeout.
718 is too slow for my taste, awesome handling aside, for the money. Even at 300bhp plus whatever bonus torque the turbo will supply. If your buying converts, I would guess tracking isn't your thing. So that being said, put the money towards feeling that power vs feeling that handling, IMHO, I think you'll enjoy it more.
A side note: I saw two dudes in a white Boxster this weekend in my neighborhood. The first thought that popped in my head was fruit basket.

I have driven several Boxsters the last being just a few weeks ago. It was a 2013 Boxster S, PDK. The car handled better than any car I have driven and was really quick from a standing start. Very nice looking car. Boxsters have come a seriously long way in the past 10 years.

Totally different cars...really need to drive both to decide. I sold my Boxster which I loved because I had to drive it at multiples of the speed limit to feel like I just wasn't around for the ride. Great build quality, lots of panache and a great handler. High service costs. C7 has the sound and the torque to enjoy every drive without going crazy...though its just a toe touch away when you are in the mood. You cannot go wrong with either but it is a matter of choosing the one that lights your fire more.

Leaving aside the price-gouging options and the maintenance costs, I hate how Porsches look too similar to each other (and that's a completely subjective thing), but this one does look quite decent. Now if it came in a coupe and with more luggage space, I'd think about it.
I test drove a whole bunch of Porsches and the dealerships here let me push them to nearly their limits as long as there wasn't traffic around. I loved how Caymans and 911s handle but I honestly enjoyed the non-turbo (at the time) 911 4S and GT3 I drove over the faster 911 Turbo S I tested. I was impressed with the fact that they let me test drive them - the right opposite of Chevy dealerships that had a couple Corvettes in stock "You can test drive them if you buy them."
I'm sure the Boxster S is a wonderful car, but the dealbreaker here personally is the engine noise and character, I'm sick of turbos on 4-cylinder and 6-cylinder engines and want a naturally aspirated V8 that roars while I can still get one, that's why a 2017 C7 is in my future.

Whenever my range buddies go on about their glocks I pull this picture out.
Buying a boxster over a Vette is kind of like that...
And I'm kidding! Buy the car you want.
There will be a 911 turbo in my garage in four months....it will however, be parked beside my C7.
