Why is new zl1 so much less $$$ than base z06 ?
Probably a simple answer here......
Zl1 seems to have same motor..... Some big brakes......new tranny option and other available goodies......
I'm sure I'm missing something .....

Because it is so much slower.

So as to continue to appeal to different customers, and have more "perceived" product differentiation.
Cars are to some extent designed and built to a target price point, but a lot of that is based on fuzzy math and artificial costs. But they are going to build and sell a crapload more Camaros (V6 and V8, RS, SS, ZL1, Z/28) than they will Z06's and Stingrays, so that they can amortize some of these artificial costs over more units........

So much slower? lol
To the thread, so much slower? Bwaa ha ha ha. That was pretty funny. Not me, someone saying so much slower.
Sorry. All kidding aside a Camaro can only be sold for so much because of its perceived lower tier status. GM however is trying to move it up market and the caste stretching ZL1 is leading that charge.
I had a couple C6s and eventually moved over to a string of Germans because I hated the rear end of C7 and the fact that the body color didn't include the A pillar. Not the taillights BTW, the black piece across the bottom. Still after my German adventure I really missed Corvettes so I decided maybe I could get a black car. I hate black because I hate washing cars but I miss Corvette and I decided to test drive one. As I was leaving a saw a Camaro and decided to give it a due diligence test drive. Turns out the car is excellent, in some ways better than the Vette. The interior materials are not so special and I dislike the stupid dash humps but the car is truly good. You folks should drive one before making too much fun of it. That ZL1 wont be as fast as a Z06 but it will be in drivers race territory. IMO the Camaro deserves some cred, it is truly a fun car to drive and has most of Corvettes performance at a fraction of its cost. I'm not sure if its the car for me but I walked away from my test drive with real respect for it.

JUST KIDDING.
Both great cars. Different strokes. Vettes, Camaros, Mustangs, SS's, GT3, GT4, AMG, GT-R.....this is a golden age of performance cars....

Its called buyer perception. A camaro is a camaro.
And also market segment. The camaro is comparable to a mustang. The corvette (at least z06) is fighting the Viper, Porsche, etc. market).
Also, I have not looked at all camaro pricing, but my dealer had a new camaro with the LT1 motor (same as base vette), convertible, fully loaded..... it cane in at $48k. Nice looking car and appeared to be a viable option if your finances could not swing a Base C7.

Seriously? It's a Camaro not a Corvette! I don't recall Camaros ever really being in the same price range as Vettes.

Has GM released ZL1 pricing? I like everything I've seen and heard about it so far and look forward to seeing one in the fall. I test drove a '16 SS to see if a Camaro might work and have to admit it was pretty nice. I'm thinkin' the ZL1 is going to be a bad-assed car and therefore might look good in my garage.

Two different platforms, wouldn't expect them to be in the same price range. Where GM is changing the game is though however is them introducing Vette "exclusive" items sooner and sooner into other classes of cars. Especially now that the ZL1 has it's own unique auto trans I'm sure the pissing matches will escalate. The Z06 platform in a pony car is a awesome bargain for Pony car enthusiast. Especially when companies like Whipple express priority interest in the ZL1 before addressing the Z06 which would have been out two years early.
But anyway OP, no one is going to pay 100K for a ZL1. Branding it into the Camaro will never yield Vette money. The Z28 was a huge flop at it's price point.

The new ZL1 is going to be a helluva car for the money. After driving a couple 2016 Camaro SS' I can only imagine how good the ZL1 will actually be. There is a night and day difference from the gen 5 to gen 6 Camaro.
I don't think the ZL1 will be as far behind the Z06 on track as most people think.

Same motor, but the motor is about $13K retail so what, $8K cost as a guess?
They share that $8K core and some big brakes but they are vastly different cars from bumper to bumper otherwise, and made with different materials. Plus they're on completely different platforms.

~$15,000 gets you:
*an all aluminum frame
*transaxle
*all composite body panels
*carbon fiber driveshaft
*carbon fiber targa top
*a wider body, tires, wheels
*dry sump
This adds to more tire patch, a much lighter car, with a much better weight distribution, open air motoring with no downsides, and a lower center of gravity. That's a killer deal that 'Vette!
What I do like about the Camaro, is that they get what it takes to be track capable:
"Finally – and unlike some competitors – there’s no need to purchase an optional package to make the ZL1 track ready. Track capability comes standard, with features including an impressive 11 heat exchangers for optimal powertrain cooling."

That's something you don't get in a Corvette.
