What do people see in Porsches???

A lot of people buy the Porsche over the Corvette because the Porsche has more prestige.
Same reason more people buy a Mercedes over a Cadillac.
Same reason more people buy a Mercedes over a Cadillac.

This is a TOUGH THREAD.
But ........ I'm not sure if the OP is serious in asking this question anyway.
Come on......does anyone NOT UNDERSTAND that Chevy is a Value Brand?
Lot's of compromises made to ensure that the Corvette is attainable.
Porsche worries far less about this. They are attempting to sell performance and quality for a premium price.
Chevy is WAL MART.
Porsche is not Tiffany...........that's where Ferrari and Lamborghini reside in the performance car market.
How-ever Porsche is certainly more willing to give up some volume of sales for a higher profit on each vehicle sold and to do that they need a lot more exclusivity that Chevy shoots for with a budget priced sports car.
There may actually be some Corvette owners who buy the car with an expectation of feeling like they've bought something special.........but it only takes a few days or weeks of ownership to realize that's just not the case......Corvette are everywhere.......so you damn well better be sure that your buying for the performance and bang for the buck value or you're in for real disappointment.
Porsche buyers........ not quite Ferrari but still......far less of them around than Corvettes.......I think the idea of buying any car because you believe it makes some statement about how well you are doing is more than just a little silly........but people do do that........and Porsche is a beneficiary of that addled thinking.
Rather than question why anyone chooses a Porsche over a Corvette or vise versa......... just buy what you want and enjoy it.........they are all cars.
They will all cost you money in terms of maintenance, insurance and depreciation..........picking the one that balances out your own enjoyment and good ownership experience vs. the cost ownership...... isn't going to be universally accepted or there would only be one maker of performance cars and all others would fail quickly.
How boring would that car world be?

Its like saying a chevy colbalt isn't as fast as a 918. Taking the highest performance model from a complete brand, and comparing it to the entry level car of a brand doesn't make sense.

This line of discussion started when someone asked me if I'd ever driven a P. I replied, "yes, a 1972 P 914". I said it was hardly more than a Karminn Ghia. Others tried to make the case that it was a better value than a 1972 Vette. No way I say. And, in general I don't think P's are worth their cost.

I went through my very lengthy (16 yrs) pre-owned Porsche 928S ownership episode. Even ran three yrs of HPDEs in it.
I was very much an aficionado. Years later, I finally bought a base Corvette, and then upgraded to a higher-model Corvette.
This is what I should have done from the beginning.
Putting aside the valid comments about Porsche engineering, racing pedigree, history, etc. I agree with bdenny:
to me the P-cars are just not worth all their costs (GT2 & GT3 likely excepted). I'll never own another one.
I know many folks who have owned them (all models--excl. GT2 & GT3) Everyone likes the cars but almost no one
likes the upkeep costs.
Expensive machines should work and be dependable. My two Corvettes have been so thus far...
YMMV...

this is only a matter of opinion....plenty of mustang owners feel the same way about vette owners, making this a moot point
right now somewhere else, there is just as silly as this, a thread asking...."what do ppl see in corvettes"..."bang for the buck, Shelby offers more".....bla bla bla....yada yada yada

A higher echelon of chowderhead can always get the Hellpussy or even better, the Demon to have legit factory 1/4 mile eaters.
But again, that's not the point.

If your ever in the Dallas, TX, I'll take you for a spin in my 991 GT3 - for starters, it makes the C7 Z06 auto trans feel like a chevy cruze...
90% or Porsche owners break even when selling/trading a Porsche.
90% of Vette owners loose 30-50% of their a$$ selling OR trading it to a stealership - which, in turn, end up sitting on the car for months as vette buyers don't want to 'pay that much for a vette'....catch 22, heh?
That being said, a Porsche is technically "the best-bang-for-the-buck sports car out".

So, I just sold my GT4 after 1.5 years of ownership and 8,000 FUN miles. I bought t MSRP and sold for basically MSRP.
I am am on the list for a 991.2 GT3 and will buy it. I still have my '10 ZR1 in the garage I bought new and have no reason or desire to sell. I love it.
So, my personal opinion is I really like Porsche especially when I can own one for minimal ownership cost. Otherwise besides build quality, very tight feel, better materials, precision, etc, I do NOT see the value relative to the Vettes. Again, just my humble opinion.
If I could buy a Z06 or upcoming ZR1 and I will lose 30% no matter what. Say $120k purchase price. Then I buy a super Porsche and will also lose 30% at $170k, I'd buy the Vette and not look back. The P-car isn't worth the extra $15k depreciation loss to me.
But for free, I'll keep buying the GT Porsche line and having fun with them. They are slick cars.
