Default Porsche Advice

Hello,

I know a lot of Corvette owners have owned 911 Porsche cars. I have been interested in either getting a C7 Z vert, or a Porsche 911 vert. If any of you would please chime in and give me some honest advice on buying a late model Porsche, I would truly appreciate it. From what I've been seeing, my price point seems to be in the 2013-2014 year P cars. I figured someone who has owned both could give me an honest review of all aspects of ownership, and maybe guide me in the right direction. The car would only be used for DD and touring. No track use. At this point I am really very open to either the Z or 911. From all I've read and seen, the P car seems to be a little more refined. I know that they are both fantastic cars.

Thank you in advance,

Dale

I haven't owned a Porsche, but I've done a hell of a lot of shopping for them. A Porsche will probably be my next sports car.

The two big things that push me towards a Porsche is that it is much better suited to be a family's second car than a Corvette. With a rear seat, I can cart my kids around in a pinch and AWD makes it practical to daily drive it year round here in the north east.

the downsides of the Porsche are the repair cost (i.e the Porsche tax) and I'm sure a Porsche is more likely to be a target of being keyed and messed with.

As far a performance goes, you really are splitting hairs there. Me personally, I have no intentions to ever drive on a track. I like to take the occasional turn fast and I like the feel of real acceleration when I hit the gas. I just about never drive faster than 80 mph. So both cars are a toss-up.

If I was looking for a third car in my household, the Corvette would definitely be it. If I didn't have kids I think I'd say "f-it" and go with the Corvette for my second car and not worry about the lack of AWD.

edit to ad: With the Porsche, I've been looking at either a 2015+ C4, 2013 C4S, or a 997 Turbo. I wouldn't get one without the AWD.

I've owned 3 Porsches, all used when I bought them. Fun and refined. The repair tax is high. I did not loose any money when I sold them.

If you're between a C7Z and 911, you're probably going to want to get into a Turbo (or Turbo S) over a non-turbo for similar performance.

991 is much more refined than 997 and larger for easy daily use. But the 997 materials and build quality is above any Corvette. I'd look at a 997 Turbo or TurboS over a 991.1 Carrera or Carrera S. If you're looking for an auto, go with the 997.2 which has PDK over the 997.1 Tiptronic (aka automatic.)

Thank you for your response. Is there any particular year of 997.2 Turbo that you would recommend over any other, or anything that I should look for before making a purchase like this? I have seen them ranging from the $50-75K range for a lower mileage 09 model model year to over $100K for several of the model years. That seems like a pretty big spread in price... I also thought I might get a manual transmission... Your thoughts are appreciated..

My 2 cents, if you want a turbo with a manual, I would go with a 2009 which is last year with Mezger built engines. For your wallets sake, try to buy CPO. Search Rennlist for other opinions.

Like alamike stated, 2009 and older have the Metzger motor which is loved by porschephile's which means they will likely hold their value better in the future. Personally, if I was buying a car to keep relatively stock, I would shop for the better car and not worry about which motor it has since their output and reliability are similar.

Can you please define and expand on what "the better car" is. My price point is about where a used, heavily optioned out, Z06 vert is. Maybe $75-80ish. Not sure what kind of P vert car you could recommend for that price...???

At your price range, I would look at 2009 and newer Carrera S cabriolets. Look for a CPO and newer is better. Get out and test drive. (40k to 90K price range)
