1972 Chevelle SS Question.
Sorry folks. Not a corvette question but would like opinions please.
I have a 1972 Chevelle SS matching numbers 350 Car that is halfway through a restoration. The original colour is Antique White with Black Stripes. I don't really like white and want to do Black with White stripes.
Do you people think it will hurt the value of the car if I change it to black from white. It is a Matching Numbers all original 1972 Chevelle SS. The motor has been upgraded to 390 Horsepower but is the original block.
Thanks

If you wanted top dollar to sell it to a collector yes it would hurt the value deviating from original, if you want to keep and and for preferred looks then paint it,

You have already started the modification process, you have lost the pure stock moniker and moved to the lightly modified arena. So sure if you like different colors go for it, I don’t think it will change the value of your car.

I think it would lose value if you paint it. When I watch the big auction tv shows, there's a lot of antique cars that have had frame off restorations that get top dollar. Also watch What's my car worth? A restoration done correctly will bring big $$$.
I'm not familiar w/ Chevelle SS; how common were 1972 white Chevelle SS?

A few years ago any deviation from original would lower the value. Today, resto-mods are bringing as much and some times more money than the original.
Now of course when something is extra special like a 1970 Chevelle SS LS6, you keep it original. An original factory built super stock, exotics, things like that.
If your car is one of thousands, deck it out the way you like and enjoy it.

What, more specifically, has been done to the engine. Are the heads original, but modified, or did you simply replace them? If you replaced them, did you keep the originals? Swap the intake manifold? If so, did you keep the original?
If you still have the original parts, then whatever you did to the engine internally, probably isn't visible, so may not negatively effect the overall value of the car....therefore, a color change would, since it obviously becomes a visible modification.

8083 Chevelle's built for Canada in 1972.
It is one of 420 1972 Chevelle SS Cars in Canada. Not sure how many in Antique white.
Block, Rods, Crank, Piston's are all original. Upgrades are various pieces. I have all of the original parts.

You'll be able to find out just about anything.
Taking a quick glance through the auctions and current high end retail sales, there doesn't seem to be any premium on original vs anything else. The restomods seem to be commanding the best price at least through Mecum.

On one hand, if you never intend to sell it, or money isn't an issue to you, then paint it or mod it, anyway you want. If you might be concerned about future value, then paint it in it's original colors, and limit your mods to ones that can easily be undone...and by all means, keep the parts you take off.......

The "Canada thing" isn't all that noteworthy. I was the original owner of a '71 SS454, which was built in Canada, but sold by an authorized Chevy dealer, here in the States.

Its not going to make a huge difference in selling price on that particular car....You will pay a lot more to change colors if you want it done right though imo...and if it isn't done right the poor results will hurt it a lot...
Good luck either way.......396/454 make it original unless its a resto mod...

Paint it if that's going to make you enjoy your car that much more, life is too short, do what you want. The cost of the paint job will certainly cost a lot more than the slight value loss you will see if you paint that particular car. Its a great car, but its the wrong year and engine to be worth any significant amount of $.
Enjoy it man the way its going to make you most content, especially if you plan on keeping it. If your planning to sell it in 2 years then leave it along b/c you will be wasting $ by painting it. GOOD luck, I love old school Detroit Muscle.

I agree, do whatever you want with it. I love the look of the 71-72 type.Had a '72 (not SS) that I made into a stock car. In hindsight I should have kept it and restored it.
By chance you're not looking for a left hand tail light lens, are you? Is there a Chevelle forum you recommend where I could post a "for sale"?
