Default Catastrophe strikes

Im pretty sure the engine in our ‘76 is done for. We were driving back down from picking up another car we bought (a 95 Cutlass convertible) when suddenly there was nothing but smoke. Got it pulled over as quickly as possible, but I think it was too late. There was oil everywhere; even all over the flatbead tow truck. No sign of coolant, so hopefully that’s good. Will start tearing her apart soon to find out what happened.

IM SO SORRY... (for your poor choice in cars, I mean REALLY, who buys a 95 Cutlass convertible...????)

Maybe you got lucky and broke a plastic oil pressure hose, or maybe a nasty valve cover leak onto an exhaust manifold?

If you didn't hear any loud noises before the smoke happened the engine might not be "toast".

could be power steering fluid from a blown line, could be just a seal blew. hopefully not a big deal. I've dealt with both of these things in the last month and all it cost me was time cleaning and a little money replacing small parts. The motor was fine. Hopefully yours is too. the seals didnt smoke much but the power steering leak had people running towards me at the car show. I thought it was a fire too

If you're just "driving along", and smoke starts pouring out, but NO bad noises first, or NO rough running, it's most likely something simple.

Man, I really hope y'all are right. I really appreciate the optimism either way. I'm going to try to start degreasing it tonight and see what I can see. I was in the car ahead, but my buddy driving said he didn't hear any noises at all; all he saw was the temp creep up to near 200.

P.S. Not a huge deal, but why did the thread get moved?

they probably thought the car that has the problem is the 95 cutlass, not the 76 vette

Probably. And actually, that does seem like the more likely scenario. Just not the case this time...
