Default Is this broken?

I know there are more people viewing this than any Camaro forum. My 1998 Z28 makes a clunk over every bump. I took off the wheel and saw this.
This is definitely broken, right? I’m 99% sure but thought I’d ask before I order a new one.

I’ll get end links and bushings while I’m at it.

I thought a Z28 was a Camaro, since it was a 68 Z28 that outran my 67 Vette.

Thanks, I wasn’t sure the bars were hollow but I found out they are. I was thinking a solid bar would just break in two.

I think what happens is that with a hollow bar, the ends are crushed together, then the holes are put through the end, so the link can go in there. This leaves a tiny gap that allows moisture and/or road salt to creep in, then create rust. I'd look up Sam Strano, for a pair of replacement bars.

I’ve read about the Strano stuff but it is pretty pricey. I’m just going to replace the front for now with a 35mm hollow bar. The BMR is the best price with free shipping. I do see notes that convertibles may need to trim the brace above the steering rack. Any chance someone knows if that is the case and what’s involved in trimming it?

I was told UMI fits without trimming so I ordered one from Jeg’s. New wheels are on the way too so I’ll have a couple projects.

You may want to look into a new, better set of shocks, while you're at it.

Broken indeed. You should get new mounting hardware too. That bolt holding the sway bar looks like its rusted badly.

Yep, it comes with new end links and bushings. Shocks are on the list for later. It looks pretty involved to swap them out. The new wheels arrived today so that may be it for this summer.

The front shocks are a little involved, because the springs are integrated with them. However, I've done that job a couple of times, on the '96 Z/28 I owned for a number of years, and it's certainly not impossible. The rear shocks, however, are pretty easy...

It cured about 90% of it but you are correct, something still rattles. None of the joints seem loose but I'm guessing it is the lower control arm.

My new tires came in and I went to get it all put on. The wheel company swore it all would work with their offsets. Surprise, 10.5" X 18" wheels with the 56mm offset don't fit in the rear. To make it more fun, the tire shop wouldn't put my old wheels on because the tires are out of date. Now I have loaner tires until I can buy spacers or get different wheels. Not the way I planned my day.

I don't deal well with offset numbers, especially when it's metric. What is the backspacing? Secondly, did you A) try to install the rear wheels with the car on a lift; and B) is the rear axle centered in the car? These cars have a panhard bar in the rear, and when the car is lifted up, the axle shifts to the right, as the axle pivots on the panhard bar's attachment point. Put the car back on the ground, the axle shifts back left.

When you install wheels that wide on the rear, even with the stock rear springs and stock ride height, you may have to install an adjustable PHB.

They are a 56mm offset, not sure what that comes to as far as backspacing. I did read about the rear not being centered, but I’m only going to 285/35/18’s. I thought the big issues came when you went over 295’s.

They have a kind of mini-lift that gets the car about a foot high. Maybe they could try and fit the other side to see if it is shifted over. Sure would be nice if it worked. I’m waiting to hear from the wheel company.
