I was recently in London and became super interested in McLarens after seeing so many of them on the street. I've been doing some reading and stopped by the McLaren dealer in Palo Alto this morning. Holy sh*t. Goes without saying I love my Grand Sport. Great car, no complaints. I like Porsches too. The base Carreras are nice but frankly no more special than the Corvettes. Once you get up to a 911 GTS or GT3, they start to cross that line. But the McLaren 720, that is a special car. The engineering, the build, the interior, the design. Some day, I would *love* to have one - even more so than a Ferrari or Lambo. The sales guy was nice and even offered me a test drive, but I didn't have the time, and I'm worried that it would warp my perception anyway. BTW, the car was $345k and they sell for MSRP.

my buddy at work bought a 570S, we went for a ride. It is a nice car. He was not happy with it initially, it had some leaks, rattles and issues that a car of that price should not have. They gave him another 570S as a loaner while they worked on it, and that car had even more issues. The service at the dealership was worse than Chevrolet too. He was about to take a huge hit and just get rid of it, but decided to keep it and see if things got better, which they did.
The car does get attention though! He chose McLaren because he felt there were enough Porsche and Ferrari around and wanted something different.
I spent some time on the McLaren forum. It seems people in general have pretty good experiences with these cars. They do depreciate far more than Ferraris and Lambos, though. Maybe I'll get a low-mileage 720 in a few years for $100k...
$345K cars are sweet, but you cannot park them at a restaurant, movies or strip club.
The wiser buy are 1-year old C7Z, ZL1, CTS-V3 and a 3500HD with a trailer.

This one here in red has just about captured my heart. And about $100K new.
The Mrs and I recently visited London too. The thing I liked the most (only thing?) is that it seemed like a car show everywhere we went. Oh, and the accent made all of the ladies seem a bit more sexy. But I digress.
Anyway, if I had just crazy money so that I wouldn't even care about spending more on a car than what a nice house (in most areas) would cost, the 720 would be at the top of my list. Or maybe a Senna if I could find a way to get my hands on one. Absolutely wonderful pieces of machinery and damn fine cars too.
I was in London last year and passed the McLaren dealer there. They also have a really large Porsche dealer not too far. I did see quite a few McLarens on the street. However I have to admit my primary target was Harrods which is well known for it's exotic spotting (and didn't disappoint as there were a few Lambos from the Middle East there that day).
A local guy autocrosses an older (heh...) McLaren MP4-12C. It's an impressive car. Draws the obvious on-lookers each time it shows up. Despite it's sporting prowess he still struggles against a good chunk of drivers in Miatas and the last time he was there a Focus RS set a time that was over two & a half seconds quicker than his best in the McLaren (to be fair though the Focus RS is a monster of a hatchback).
I can't speak specifically because obviously I don't own one nor could I but I believe a huge reason why McLaren is so popular among exotic buyers is it's accessibility. Unlike Ferrari and to a degree Lambo, McLaren doesn't care about your prior ownership or exotic status so long as you have the money to buy the car. There's no end of stories re: Ferrari pushing away buyers who say are the "best" for the brand, and it's causes those buyers frustration.
They're also just impressive cars all around; great styling, performance, etc.

Yeah McLarens are on a different level for maintenance/repairs. Rob Ferretti on youtube said his MP4-12C had steering rack that self destructed...repair cost? $35,000. Battery died, had to be replaced with a ultra light weight Li-ion battery....cost? $3000
A cheap, used exotic, especially a McLaren, is one of the most expensive vehicle to own. Better have at least $50,000 ready in the bank for unexpected repair/breakdowns...or buy a warranty
