I do not understand how anyone can not love these cars.
Beautiful car. I am going to be in the market for a Gen V next year, hopefully. The family wants a pool and an RV. lol

For HPDE, I believe the answer is yes. For competition, a roll bar is required. Here are the rules, as posted by one HPDE organization:
Factory Rollover Protection & Roll Bars
Factory rollover protection (including pop-up or active) is acceptable in Novice & Intermediate run groups. Aftermarket roll bars are HIGHLY recommended for the Advanced group.
The following cars are known to have factory rollover protection and are approved to run:

BMW Z4 & Z3, 3 series, 6 series, M series 1998-present
