Default Painting the inside of my garage door. Need help

Don't move this to OT please. I think it'd be better off here.

I'm painting the inside of my garage door. Decided to do an American flag design.

What i need to know is whats kind of paint should i use? Whats the best prep for this?

Also should i paint the support beams(3) and the hinges(12)? Right now they are a cheap looking faded metallic color. I can polish them up some but it would take a LOT of work. I would rather just paint over them. If i do paint over then should i use a different type of paint or prep them differently.

Hopefully this will be like a car and someone here will know what do do. I'll be using a roller and brush for the hard to get areas.

Since it is the inside of the door out of the weather and direct sun light
I would use enamel paint like what you would find at Wal-Mart in the
Pint cans or larger. Not Laytex.

Prep the door by scrubbing it with comet cleaner.

support beams(3) and the hinges(12)? guess that would a judgement
call. Will it look good? Ya or Na.

I painted a 6' x 8' Blown Hemi engine on a Block wall of my high school
auto mechanics dept. with the same type paint 25 years ago using
paint brushes..........That engine is still on that wall today.

Post a pic when your done I would love to see it.

I think it would be easier to paint the metal too. enamel paint for that too? do i need a primmer or something?

What I meant by "Look good" was will your design look good if you
don't paint them, or will it take away from it to much?

If the metal parts of the garage door are bare metal then they might
be galvanize and if they are they will need to be primed with something.
Even auto paint doesn't like to stick to galvanize metal.

They do make an aerosol primer for galvanize. I would talk with reps
at the paint stores (one that specializes in home interior paints).
The compatibility between the two I don't know and Not knowing
exactly what the door is made of I'm only guessing.

But now I did paint an engine (actual one this time) that had been
hot tanked with acrylic enamel automotive paint.......no primer and
no activator, with a brush right on the bare block and it held up very
well. (It was Corvette yellow and went in my 4x4).

But I still think the enamel with be the easier and "cheaper" way to go
than trying to use automotive grade paints especially when dealing with
multi colors. You could probably buy "Everything" at Wal-Mart for what
that one can of RED will cost you in Auto Paint.

I work and am taking a night class so i probably won't even get started till next Friday.

I do get a 20% discount at the local do it best hardware store for being a student. They seem to have old guys who know their stuff. I'll ask them about the metal painting and possibly get the paint i need there if it's the same $ as walmart(even with a 20% discount.)

I might leave the hinges but i think the beams need to be painted as to not distract from the painting too much.

I can shine up the hinges even if it takes a lot of work.

Default War Bonnet Yellow Garage doors!

I brought one top section to Lowes today and had them match the color! They thought I was nuts! Am I? I am going to paint the inside of my garage doors and the interior trim (windows and two exit doors) to match the Vette. Ahh, retirement.

This thread is 6 years old lol.

Painted, moved out, bought the house with my sister, and now she's living there.

Not sure why the thread was brought back to life but might as well update it lol.
