Default Need Advice on painting a Moon Roof

Just Picked up a pair of moon roofs for my 75. Very happy with the condition they are in, just not the color.

Bought a couple of cans of touch-up paint from a local supplier. Question I have is, how aggressive go I need to sand the existing paint ?
I've heard from a green pad, to 320 grit paper.

Your thoughts Please ?

I don't want to spend $350.00 with the Body Shop to do this. The Black paint on them is smooth as glass, no scratches or chips.

Thank You,

Bill

If you are using aerosol paint...I would scuff them with a gray Scotch brite pad and shoot them. But I also know the chances the aerosol paint can fail due to the UV's of the sun in time.

320 grit is a bit aggressive but it mall depends on the paint you are using and how thin it is. 320 is normally for primer which is thicker.

Or I might use 500 grit wet/dry paper and not use the gray a Scotch brite pad and get the black scuffed DULL and that will be fine.

IF in doubt... do the logical thing and that is to TEST it on something else first.

Dub,

Thank You, I have used this same aerosol paint on the scuffed door jams. I just wasn't sure how aggressive to be with paint currently on the tops.
Just looking to make it exemptible for NOW, as I'm sure a future repaint would include the tops.

Think I'll go with the 500 grit, and cross my fingers.

Thanks again,

Bill

Generally aerosol paints do not have solvents in them that are so strong that they can soften and wrinkle up cured paint...as long as the aerosol paint is not applied sopping wet.

Light wet coats at first then you can apply 'wetter' coats once you get a few layers on it that has dried well....depending on how much you want to aopp0ly on it.

Thank You Dub,

These cans were "made" for me at the paint shop. Do I still have a concern ?

I don't wanna screw-em Up..............

Thanks,

I would clean with wax and grease remover, wet sand with 800, or da with 320..wax and grase remover again, tack, spray 3-4 coats, optional buff if you put enough paint on....after 2 week cure.

That would be my diy with rattle can..

OK, Finally Got Around to It......

First sand at 600 grit, went back and got rid of any shiny spots after this picture.

Then made sure that the sealer was below the paint and glass, before taping, and then let the paint GO !

Color is a bit on the "light" side, but maybe it will Darken as it dries. (pictures within 1/2 hour of painting)

Thanks to All that gave me the courage to try this...........

Will wait a couple of weeks, then color sand and polish. Then reseal Black RTV around Glass,

Thanks Again.

Have a Great Day,

Bill

Oh, and back on the Car.............

Total paint and supplies $105.00 vs $400.00 at body shop. Is it a Perfect Match ? NO, but real cost saving to Me, and someday, a repaint on the whole car.

Have a Great Day,

Bill
