Default staying out of 4th gear, while drag racing!! help

As of right now I've ran a best of 11.453@118. I did this with 3.90 gears, stock trans, 4000 stall, and 26 inch tires.

I'm looking to add 100-150hp dry shot of nitrous. With that I'm adding 28inch tall tires.

The problem arises with the last track outing with the 11.45 I was at the top of 3rd gear. I'm afraid that when I add the nitrous with the 28in tires, I'm going to have to hit 4th gear before the end of the track. My buddy has told me I have to stay out of 4th as it only contains 2 clutch disks. Which wont be enough to hold OD together with the nitrous.

What is are you A4 guys who are running gears and spray doing? Shifting into 4th? staying in 3rd?

Please help me understand

JEFF

that doesnt seem right, what is your rev limiter set at for that cam?

at a 6600 redline with 3.90's you should be able to trap 126 with a little converter slippage on 26's in 3rd gear which is a 1:1 ratio. if you drop down to a 3.70 gear you can run high 120's-low 130's.

yeah I did some thinking and check a few calculators for some reference i think I'm shifting at 6500R's. hopefully those 28" tall tires will help alot

Will the fact that a slick grows alittle in diameter at high speed help this situation at all?

Thanks for to input. I appreciate it

yes, but then you run into the tire rubbing on the fender or fender well.

i would say that 26's should get you in the 125 plus mph area first.

28"'s don't hit the fender, only the inside of the fenderwell, and it's only slightly.

with those gears you should not run out as stated if shifting at 6500rpm...what you might consider is edit your lockup on your converter to come in at @112mph and this will shoot your mph up out the back door to probably 120 or so.

Jeff,
This is where I have seen guys take the 3.90's out in favour of a reduced ratio.

unfortunately it looks like after this race season, I might drop in some 3.73's or dare I say it 3.42's

The 28" tires should get me through the traps in 3rd for the rest of the season

thanks for the input

JEFF
