Default NA build after a year

Now that I’ve had the initial build together for just over a year, I thought I should post a review of everything I did and my experience with the car since.

The goods….

01 manual coupe

Trick Flow 215 GenX CNCd Heads

Harland Sharp 1.7 roller rockers

TSP 228R cam 228/228 .600/.600 114 LSA

TSP dual valve springs w/ titanium retainers

LS7 lifters

LS2 timing chain

Moroso high volume oil pump

ARP head bolts

ARP Crank bolt

ARP Water Pump Bolts

ARP Header bolts

ATI Super Damper

Borla axle back exhaust

TSP 1 3/4 long tube headers

TSP off-road catless X pipe

Mighty Mouse catch can

Blackwing CAI

I also deleted the air pump and the egr garbage.

The results…

Admittedly I haven’t put a ton of miles on the car. Just a couple thousand since building the engine. Definitely a fair weather car. I’ve also had the interior and suspension completely out of the car since.

I’ll start with the bad. After driving and getting the car good and warm, when you shut it off and fire it back up, it doesn’t like to idle. Once you take off it comes out of it. I’m guessing its in the tune. It hasn’t bothered me enough to even worry about it.

The good…..absolutely everything else! It’s how a Corvette should be. I’ve never seen temps over 210ish. No oil pressure issues. No crazy rocker noise. As someone would say, “She’s a Certified Ripper!”

There’s also not much that sounds better than a cammed LS. I get complements on the way it sounds every time I take it out.

The only thing I would’ve and should’ve done differently was pinning the crank. I didn’t do it so it means tearing it down if I decide to boost later. At some point I’m sure I’ll finish the top end off. I’d like to add a low rise Holley with some bigger injectors, fuel pump…..This year was Coilovers. It’s a sickness. The list of things I haven’t had apart is getting pretty short.

Nice build. Mine is very similar. Curious what you shift at going all out.

Nice! I have the same cam running in my LS6 (Z06) with AHP CNC ported 243 heads, with similar supporting mods to your build. My set up made 442 hp at the wheels. I love the cam.

What injectors are you currently running?

Stock injectors, rails, intake, TB, MAF sensor. Oem coils and even plug wires. It was tuned on 91 octane but I’ve been running BP 93 ever since the tune. He told me the Sunoco 91 that was in it was garbage so I switched.

If I’m really pulling gears I’m probably 6200 6300. Just cruising around im shifting more like 2500-3000.

Torque figure seems very high for a heads/cam 346.

HP/TQ ratio isn’t typical of a NA car either. The split is too close.

That’s an ugly dyno curve. Lumpy as hell.

my car that I tune and ran on the dyno. I was the dyno operator.

I plan on having it re-tuned once I do the rest of the top end. Might be this winters project if I don’t pull the trigger on an Active Aero wing I’ve been eyeing. The tuner said the fuel was garbage so I’m sure he was fighting that. The butt dyno isn’t nearly as lumpy 😂. It’s nothing I can feel during road pulls.

Basically... The car isn't making 470 whp... and especially not 460 wtq on stock injectors. Honestly, that car realistically on a dynojet, with the SAE correction, would be maybe a 430/390-400 wheel car. Once you get past that mark, then injectors start going out. I am sure it is fun though.

….so the dyno numbers are wrong? I’ll go ahead and stick with what it shows and what my tuner told me, vs random internet guy. Like I said, I’ll have it base lined before I finish the top end. We’ll see what it says.

What's right and what's wrong is debatable. Obviously the dyno shows what it shows, I just don't think you understand that for a 5.7 engine to make 460 wheel torque, is tough/almost impossible on just motor.

Your better bet to see what kind of power it actually makes, is to go to the track and see what it traps.
