Default Best 1/4 Mile Time to Date

Hi All,

Just wanted to post up my timeslip from my best run to date (I'm on the left). I'm a bit disappointed given by time versus what I see a lot of others with similar HP numbers running at the track. This was only my 6th pass ever, so I'm clearly no pro driver.

Some stats on the car:
97 C5 Manual with 3.42 Rear
TSP headers with high flow cats and Z06 exhaust
Tick SNS stage 2 cam
Lightly ported 243 heads
LS6 Intake
Ported LS6 TB
KN intake
Running 275/40/17 Hoosier Drag radials
Monster Stage 2 clutch

Car Dyno'd right at 400 rwhp.

I know I need to work on my 60ft times and imagine I can shave off .3 of a second off my time there once I get more consistent with my launches, but I just don't see myself getting into the low 12's or high 11's like I see with a lot of other cars with what I have. I'm shifting at about 6-6200 because anymore and I have the tendency to miss shifts or can't get the car into gear. I'm at 117k on the trans/torque tube/rear and am definitely afraid of blowing something up leaving too hard on the radials.

Would appreciate if anyone has any feedback or has had similar results. I know more seat time and runs will help, but would like to narrow down that its more driver than car.

Seat time is key. Your 60 is pretty high for drag radials. But I understand you don't want to break anything. For every .1 in the 60 is good for about .2 on the big end. So if you got the 60 down to 1.7 you would be mid 11. Probably should rev higher also. Rev limiter is there for a reason. 🙂 Trap is pretty low with the mods you have. Just keep practicing and save up for some rear end goodies.

Work on that launch and raise your shift rpm. Those tires are about the best you can get for stock power level, but I’d prefer to see you on a bias ply tire. Especially with an aftermarket clutch.

That said, I’d bet there’s a 1.6 60’ time in that car with more practice.

Good luck!

I'd like to be on a bias ply as well, but I couldn't find a 17 inch bias ply that wasn't 28 inches tall. I probably should have bit the bullet and bought a 16 inch rim for the back at that point but money was tight and the number of times I could make it to the track was dwindling. I plan on working on my launch and trying to get my shifts up higher. I'd love to cut a time under 2.0 for the 60'. Thanks!

I have ran 200+ 1.5 60 fts on about the same power so I wouldn't worry about breaking anything too much.. im on stock rear, stock torque tube and everything also.. I have a stalled auto so its a little easier to launch though so it will just take some practice. My car runs 7.1 @ 94mph in the 1/8th cam only.. stock 853 heads

That is why I mentioned it. My mph is higher though which shouldn't be the case usually..

True, that typically a manual will mph higher than an auto. This is more noticeable in a 1/4 mile pas vs the 1/8 simply due to time to accelerate.

I believe in the comparison of your slip vs the OP, the difference is due primarily to his lack of effective shifting. Also, we don’t know what was happening at the mph block for the 1/8th. He could have been between gears or have just shifted and there was a delay in the acceleration...

Thats what I am thinking.. I'm guessing he is not only losing quite a bit on the launch but between each shift

Sounds about right, it takes practice.
Learn to slip that clutch...main thing is youre having fun. Lots of guys on internetland that claim xx times cause they read someone else with similar mods did but they have never been down a track.
Dont worry about it. Shoot, it took a number of runs to get an auto 89 L98 from 15s to low 14s just learning where it wanted to be shifted at, what rpm to leave the line.
Could never get my ZR-1 in the 12s...always 13s with 12 mph. Launching a stick on street tires with a narrow stiff sidewall takes time.

A simple M/T or M and H drag radial is all you need. More sidewall over sheer width.
At the end of the day its the cheapest fun out there....nobody goes out there 1st time and knocks them dead.
A prepped track is a huge difference from playing on the street. Take into account elevation, DA engine temps etc play a factor. Running the same car at 2 different tracks (LACR and Famoso) netted over 1/2 sec difference.

Lack of seat time is definitely affecting my shifting. I think I'd benefit from a rebuild of the trans (118k) at this point because my fastest pass of the night was the first off the trailer, and then the chance after that of missing a shift or not getting into gear noticeably increases after that. I had to back off my shifting RPM as the night went on because I was "getting" locked out of a shift here or there. I say "getting" because I don't want to completely blame the car either.

I'm also working on the slipping and launch RPM as well. Definitely hesitant to let it rip as I don't really want to break anything at this point. I've been conservative at around 2.5 - 3.5k and have hooked pretty well. The track the night of my slip was getting worse and worse as the night went on traction wise and I spun bad on my last run of the night.

I haven't had the chance to get back to the track since; but I hope to get better the more runs I get. I'm having a blast and getting to spend a lot of good time with my father and some buddies doing so. He's happy with the car as well so I can't complain. Now to save up some money for the winter to look at a rebuild for the trans/diff.

Should be shifting as close to 7000 as you can. Thats why your mph is low. Are you running the stock clutch master cylinder?

Don't worry about your times. It's a manual and your going to have to work for those 11's. I've had LS powered manual cars and the best thing you can do is practice. A piece of free advice I can give you is, flush your clutch fluid before and after you go to the track.

You should be able to get that 60' time into the 1.7x range without much fear of breaking anything, gotta practice that launch!!! Also, as others have stated, your MPH should be higher (117-118 or better). Try flushing your slave cylinder fluid using the "Ranger Method" (a simple search will find it), sounds like that may be the culprit which is making your shifting difficult. Practice, practice and practice. Your car conservatively has mid-upper 11's capability. I'd be curious to know what the DA was when you made your runs? Good luck!!!!

Been rained out the past three weekends and then had a wedding. Hopefully I get back soon. Clutch fluid flush is on the schedule. The fluid was really dark the last time I flushed it, and I've been meaning to do it again.
