While it doesn't directly affect me (short of some idiot literally blowing smoke in my face), its insane how much sin tax there is on cigarettes. Educate people about the dangers, but don't think you can tax it out of existence.

On the other hand, its NYC. Let that cesspool shred itself apart.

So you're fine with social engineering and tax hikes so long as it doesn't touch YOUR sacred cow.

Noted.

Is it possible that a smoker who gets lets say lung cancer and has no benefits leaving the government to fit the bill warrants a tax hike on the said problem, cigs?

That's why they are called progressives. They constantly chip away at your rights and people say oh that dosent effect me until one day it does. Sodas, cigarettes, gas. What's next?

Dont add any deterrent. Just let the smokers continue to kill themselves. They are all doing a pretty good job of it so far.

They're also in the business of telling you what you must have. Health care or they'll tax your ***.

How the **** is it freedom when the taxpayers pay about 60 percent of the costs of medical care that smokers require. You are ******* myopic.

I seriously don't care if you smoke, drink, do drugs and don't wear helmets on cycles. Just don't ask society to pay the costs of your indulgences.

The people coming into the city already don't buy in the city so it directly hurts the people in the city.
...and they said if we prohibit the production of alcohol everybody would quit drinking. How'd that work out?

I don't care about the rising prices of cigarettes either, but the government causing it is a problem for me.

Point being is people are just going to pay the extra $$. No one is going to hop in a cab and head over the bridge, or their own car, it doesn't pay. On the Island it's a buck or two less, not sure about Jersey but still when you factor in fuel and time, a smoker will just pay. I remember hearing the same people say when it hits $5 i'LL quit, $7 I'll quit,$10 I'll quit, they don't, they just pay more.

We agree on the latter. I think people should be perfectly free to indulge in whatever harmful vice they happen to have, but at the same time, expecting you or I to fund or subsidize that vice or its effects... well, that encroaches on OUR freedom, doesn't it.

But back on topic, people looking to up the tax on a pack of **** is nothing more than short sighted, selfish "Well it doesn't affect ME, so who cares!" bullshit. Supporting a bigger cigarette tax is supporting more government and more social engineering. A rational minded conservative opposes this.

Don't worry, they WILL come for something you like and if attitudes like this are maintained, they'll get it with little to no resistance.

They don't have to go anywhere. The cigarettes will come to them.
