I smoke filtered cigars ("homeless killers") that cost 99 cents a pack.

Doesn't this harm poor people?
Naaa, they sell "selfies" or smoke black market cigs...

In NYC it's all about more $$ to support illegals, Muzzies and whatever else is the pandered to flavor du jours.

They will continue to do what have have been doing already, crossing over to NJ and buying there. Plus filling up the gas tank (since gas is cheaper there too) and buying soda/ bottled water to skip on the 5 cent per bottle/can deposit.

The mayor will then see the drop in tax income from the sales and claim a victory of cutting the amount of smokers (false) , then enact or raise another tax to make up for the loss of cigarette revenue to complete the cycle.

Only if they can stand to switch to Indian made brands. NY state passed a law that would have forced Indians to collect and pay tax on "name brand" cigarettes. So they in turn stopped selling all bands but their own.

But back on topic, people looking to up the tax on a pack of **** is nothing more than short sighted, selfish "Well it doesn't affect ME, so who cares!" bullshit. Supporting a bigger cigarette tax is supporting more government and more social engineering. A rational minded conservative opposes this.

Don't worry, they WILL come for something you like and if attitudes like this are maintained, they'll get it with little to no resistance.
They come for something I like every April 15.

The point is that if you do something purely on your own volition that will make you sick or injured our society takes care of you when you don't have the ability to pay for your misdeeds. How do you offset the societal costs that you know will accrue from these vices? I get your point about pure conservatism, but that is theory, and I'm talking reality.

By giving those people limited care. But if somebody isn't free to decide what they put into their own body, they aren't free.

All that idiot commie mayor is doing is putting more people in the position of going to other lower tax states bringing back a **** load of cigs and selling them at a nice profit.

Price does not bother me, I'm a life time non smoker, but if you like to smoke do it, as they say in the Navy the smoking lamp is lit!

Before answering that question, will the tax revenue raised on cigs be put aside with an independent trustee to be used only for the medical issues that arise from smoking by indigents? Or will it go in the general fund to be used on anything that suits the legislature's fancy?

Drive a panel van to Kentucky. Fill it up with $5.40 a pack cigarettes. Drive said van to New York City and sell the cigarettes for what?.....$8 a pack? Of course the packs won't have the correct New York tax stamps on then. The buyers won't care. The tax stamp problem can be solved by selling them as singles.

Good for them and so they should.

The mighty USA is getting more and more like Communist Canada day by day.

Toronto
1 pack name brand smokes $13.00
1 26oz barcardi rum $27.00

Anybody that smokes is stupid.

They have laws against that. Check this out - remember Eric Garner?

Quote:
On July 17, 2014, Eric Garner died in Staten Island, New York City, after a New York City Police Department (NYPD) officer put him in what has been described as a chokehold for about 15 to 19 seconds while arresting him. The New York City Medical Examiner's Office attributed Garner's death to a combination of a chokehold, compression of his chest, and poor health. NYPD policy prohibits the use of chokeholds.

NYPD officers approached Garner on suspicion of selling "loosies" (single cigarettes) from packs without tax stamps. After Garner told the police that he was tired of being harassed and that he was not selling cigarettes, the officers went to arrest Garner. When officer Daniel Pantaleo tried to take Garner's wrist behind his back, Garner pulled his arms away. Pantaleo then put his arm around Garner's neck and took him down onto the ground. After Pantaleo removed his arm from Garner's neck, he pushed the side of Garner's face into the ground while four officers moved to restrain Garner, who repeated "I can't breathe" eleven times while lying facedown on the sidewalk. After Garner lost consciousness, officers turned him onto his side to ease his breathing. Garner remained lying on the sidewalk for seven minutes while the officers waited for an ambulance to arrive. The officers and EMTs did not perform CPR on Garner at the scene; according to a spokesman for the PBA, this was because they believed that Garner was breathing and that it would be improper to perform CPR on someone who was still breathing. He was pronounced dead at the hospital approximately one hour later.

Good Idea, I never understand why you would smoke Cigarette if you know it's going to kill you.
