Default De Blasio backs raising minimum price of cigarettes to $13 a pack!

A pack of cigarettes in New York City is going to get more expensive — $13 at a minimum — and harder to find, if Mayor de Blasio has his way.

The mayor announced his support today for a package of City Council bills aimed at cutting the number of smokers by 160,000 by 2020 today — including hiking the minimum price for a pack from $10.50 to $13, capping the number of retailers in each neighborhood that can sell tobacco, banning pharmacies like Duane Reade from selling smokes, and regulating e-cigarettes in the same way as cigarettes.

cigarettes in cartons are now a medium of exchange,
a substitute for money itself,
method of payment for drugs and prostitution favors,
trade cigarettes for guns,
guns hold up stores that sell cigarettes
money used to buy cigarettes= here is your social justice and democrat run economy
--------------------------------
don't blame the guns, "blame the taxes" on cigarettes for crime and poverty-
democrat tax self perpetuates murder and poverty .

Blame the democratic government for slavery and bondage.

And what happens when they decide to raise the cost of something you DO care about? All the smokers are going to go "**** you buddy, you didn't care when it was US!"

Pointless tax raises are pointless tax raises and I oppose them. Even if I find cigarettes repugnant.

Do societal costs of what we indulge in enter your equation?

Are you a smoker? Edit: Obviously not.

Oh this will just set the stage for more consumable taxes. When more and more people quit smoking and the bloated city governments lose that tax revenue, then the liberals will need to tax something else. Just another viscous cycle brought to you by those who think they can tax others into prosperity.

Want to get an uproar going quick in the liberal ranks, start adding a $20.00 tax to a bottle of wine, or a six pack of coolers. Watch the outrage then.

The fact that they were ever sold in pharmacies is ridiculous.

The last examination I saw of social costs due to smoking was that smokers save the country money. They pay cigarette taxes during their life (unlike non-smokers), and while they do cost society health care money in their last days (but even non-smokers cost society money in their last days, so it's a wash there) the government saves money by not paying out additional years of social security money, unlike those non-smokers who generally live longer than smokers.

I've never taken up the habit, and I find it smelly and unhealthy, but as long as you don't stink up the air I'm breathing or dining in, I'm fine with people smoking if they wish.

Democrats literally stealing money from poor people.

Yet they still have the nerve to talk about fairness in income taxes...when poor people don't pay any.

Seriously, just a ******* absolutely corrupt and full of lies party. I honestly can't understand how anyone votes for these fools. I mean I completely understand not voting republican.....but to keep voting democrat....that's just stupid.

Thing is obesity cost the tax payer far more, the health cost are far more and it is worse on your health than smoking. But there is no tax or health insurance penalty for being obese.

It will work. Majority of people who live in the city work in the city, shop in the city. A lot of people don't have cars because they don't need them if you live in the city. Also on long island they are already $10 to $11 a pack. So economically taking ones car, or a cab or a train wouldn't be worth it unless you really stock up. The people coming into the city already don't buy in the city so it directly hurts the people in the city.

Default sad, more crime?

instead of just addicts robbing to pay for a fix now we'll probably have smokers needing to do the same to get their fixes. chain-smokers will be the most dangerous. then we'll have illegal and cheaper smokes
being peddled. BUT if enough smokers get weaned off BECAUSE of the cost,, who is going to help pay sports owners and municipalities for their stuff.

lose-lose ny! sigh, i remember when a pack of smokes were 35 cents and was addicted to even trying get one more puff out of an old butt.
I KICKED THE HABIT(ADDICTION)ON MY OWN-NO PILLS, NO PATCH,NO PROGRAM,,,JUST WILL!
