S. Korea responds to Trump's China claim: 'Shocking ignorance'

World News This morning

In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, the president said "Korea actually used to be part of China" while discussing takeaways from his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Korea is dismayed.

It depends on how far back in history you want to go, because yes at several times in the past, Korea has been part of China.. (you too can google it)

Wonder if anyone here would refute that England was part of the Roman Empire at one time too.....

Here is some info

Maybe Trump was trying to impress with his knowledge of ancient history.

Maybe colonies.....

I appreciate the new administration bumps and all, but perhaps he needs to stick to grabbing female genitalia. Something familiar.....

And more recently it was part of the empire of Japan.

Kind of doubt they want to go back to that either

And the right will just try to ignore it as a typical Trump blunder?

Same site comments

Short answer is a no. More nuanced and subjective answer is a yes, for about 50 years after Mongols subdued Goryeo kingdom. This is subjective because Korea did still have nominal king and he did have absolute authority on Korean peninsula - but this king was almost more a part of Yuan court than an independent king - they were all married into Yuan imperial princesses and even grew up in Yuan court in many cases. Mongols of course arenít exactly Chinese, so thatís why itís subjective, if youíre a Chinese person of Mongol descent then the answer is a yes, sort of.

It's a warning to NK.

Chinese troops already moved to NK border.

I don't think it's a blunder. I think he's intentionally signaling to NK that we wouldn't likely do a thing about China marching in and taking over NK.

All at a time when China is expressing uncharacteristic (for them) public concern about NK.

In other words - if China moves to fix (absorb) NK, he's signaling that's fine.

Good site. If you go through Wiki, it has all that info but it is fragmented and you have to go through several different pages of History of China and History of Korea, correlating dates between the two.

That first commenter on the the site you provided sums it all up well.

The northern part of the peninsula was briefly under Chinese rule, but never the south. So Trump isn't wrong, but the reference is so far in the past as to be completely irrelevant.

It's like saying Egypt was once part of Macedonia. Yeah, for a short time under the empire of Alexander. Nobody's saying Greece should now run Egypt.

Pretty ridiculous reference.

You think that Trump is that deep? If he is, that was a smooth move.

However, he should clarify that for the South Koreans.
