Default Southern schools: Let us eat grits!

Since I self identify as Southern, I must completely agree with this article. Long live Martha Whites Self Rising Flour and slow cooked grits!

"I’m fairly certain that, had Southerners known President Obama had taken away their biscuits and grits, Mitt Romney would’ve won the South in a landslide."

"I’m fairly certain that, had Southerners known President Obama had taken away their biscuits and grits, Mitt Romney would’ve won the South in a landslide."

"Like Grandmother Starnes used to say, biscuits should only be made from buttermilk and Martha White Flour, the way the Good Lord intended."

I've lived in the south all 77 years except for 2 in Germany (USAF) and don't like grits. Used to call Grits Georgia Ice cream.

Growing up in Michigan, I would never eat them. I tried them in NW Florida (Southern Alabama) and liked them, especially with butter and bacon.

I've had good shrimp and grits on a couple of occasions in Nashville.

Chef's joke: What's the difference between grits and polenta?

A: About fifteen bucks.

I grew up in the deep South. Never could stand grits. Only way they're tolerable is if you cover them with butter, sugar and other ****.
Nasty.

Grits are kinda bland and they do need something to give them some flavor like bacon grease. To me they are an acquired taste, like eating turnip greens, mustard greens, brussels sprouts, cooked cabbage or boiled okra. Don't care for any of them, but now poke salad is a whole different story.

Only grits I've ever had were Waffle House grits, and they were...spectacular

True, which is why nobody eats them plain. You at least put some butter and salt on 'em. Personally I like to cook up some sausage and mix it in.

As a Northerner, I was introduced to grits in Navy boot camp in San Diego. They served it every breakfast. I assumed it was Cream of Wheat and put milk on it. My buddies asked me what I thought I was doing!
Now when traveling in the south, I will sometime order grits at a restaurant. Sometimes it is good.

MMM Nothing better than good grits for breakfast with sausage or bacon and eggs. Beats the hell out of hash browns.

Sausage gravy on biscuits if it's done right are really good. They serve them at a the local cafes's on the beach that cater to the shrimper crews. They'll stick with you all day.

Grandpa used to mix his eggs and bacon grease with them and swore it was manna from heaven.
