Default Trump refers to slaves as Indentured Servants

https://www.breitbart.com/clips/2019...s-from-africa/

oh wait, that’s that racist VA Governor Northam.

Sunday on CBS’s “Face the Nation,” Gov. Ralph Northam (D-VA) described the first slaves to arrive in Virginia in 1619 as “the first indentured servants from Africa.”

While addressing the controversy over the photo of people in blackface and a Ku Klux Klan robe on his medical school yearbook, Northam said, “Well, it has been a difficult week, and you know if you look at Virginia’s history, we’re now at the 400-year anniversary. Just 90 miles from here in 1619, the first indentured servants from Africa landed on our shores in Ole Point Comfort, what we call now Fort Monroe.”

CBS News’ Gayle King said, “Also known as slavery.”

Northam continued, “Yes, and you know, while we’ve made a lot of progress in Virginia, slavery has ended, schools have been desegregated, we have ended the Jim Crow laws, easier access to voting, it is abundantly clear that we have a lot of work to do.”

Didn't he also tell her we wouldn't be resigning because VA needed someone that could heal it?

Technically Northam is correct. The first slaves arrived in Virginia som 30 years after the indentured servants. He still needs to resign.

He is correct. The "indentured servants" were not slaves - they were released by the serving their indenture. The slaves didn't arrive to VA until the end of 17th century.

Some people need to lean more history, and not believe what is being taught in public schools as the truth.

AFRICANS ARRIVE IN VIRGINIA, 1619

One stormy day in August of 1619 a Dutch manof-war with about 20 Africans on board entered port at the English colony of Jamestown, Virginia. Little is known of these newly arrived people: the first Africans to set foot on the North American continent. At this time the slave trade between Africa and the English colonies had not yet been established, and it is unlikely that the 20 or so newcomers became slaves upon their arrival. They were perhaps considered indentured servants, who worked under contract for a certain period of time (usually seven years) before they were granted freedom and the rights accorded to other settlers. Their historic arrival, however, marked the beginning of an atrocious trend in colonial America, in which the people of Africa were taken unwillingly from their motherland and consigned to lifelong slavery. The robust economic growth of the English colonies was caused largely by this exploitative institution.

Many scholars agree that the captain and crew of the Dutch ship stole their valuable human cargo from the San Juan Bautista, a Portuguese merchant-slaver that had been making its way from the West African port town of Luanda, Angola to Vera Cruz. The raid of the Portuguese ship took place on the high seas and when the Dutch adventurers arrived in Virginia they traded the Africans to Jamestown settlers in exchange for food. If these Africans indeed hailed from Luanda, which was then the newly established capital of the Portuguese colony of Angola, it is likely that they had been trading with Europeans for years, that they spoke a language in common with these Europeans, and that they were Christians. It is possible that these characteristics enabled them to escape a life of slavery, which was to become the fate of the more ethnically and linguistically diverse groups of Africans that arrived in North America in later years.

The social status of the first Africans in Jamestown was confusing, and perhaps deliberately ambiguous. Records from 1623 and 1624 list the black inhabitants of the colony as servants, not slaves. In these same records, however, white indentured servants are listed along with the year in which they were to attain freedom; no such year accompanies the names of black servants. Freedom was the birthright of William Tucker, the first African born in the colonies. Yet court records show that at least one African had been declared a slave by 1640, the year that slavery was officially instituted in Jamestown. After the legalization of slavery by the Virginia colony, the African population began to rise slowly and steadily. The number of blacks increased from 23 in 1625 to approximately three hundred in 1650.

The first slave owner in America was a black man. Go figure, since slavery was an accepted practice in Africa at the time.

Anthony Johnson (b. c. 1600 – d. 1670) was a black Angolan who achieved freedom in the early 17th-century Colony of Virginia after serving his term of indenture. He became a property owner that owned slaves, and was one of the first people in Virginia to have his right to own a slave legally recognized. Held as an indentured servant in 1621, he earned his freedom after several years, and was granted land by the colony.[1]

He later became a successful tobacco farmer in Maryland. He attained great wealth after having been an indentured servant and has been referred to as “'the black patriarch' of the first community of Negro property owners in America".[1]

Some indentured servants had it as bad or worse than slaves, starved to death and horribly abused due to religious persecution - research some early Florida history for examples. Many of this bunch never lived long enough to be free...

BS.

My first ancestor in the Americas was an "Indentured servant". That meant the English came into his Scottish home, killed as many of the men as possible, raped all the women and took any boys prisoner and declared them "Prisoners of War", even though their was no war going on. They were then charged for their own imprisonment and got re-named "Indentured Servants", shipped to the North Americas in November with no blankets or warm clothing (80% of the "Cargo" died on the trip) and sold at a slave auction. They were "Indentured" to the British government, who sold their fake sheet of money owed to a private individual to be used as slaves. They were considered lower than slaves, as they came with a negative financial balance. As "Indentured servants" they were required to be paid a "Salary", which was the equal of a few cents a week. The ONLY path out of being a slave was to pay off the purchase price to their owners. This is no different than any other slave arrangement wherein the slave either pays their own way, or somebody else buys them out.

I'm sick and tired of hearing how bad Africans had it in the US. The UK had been abusing, enslaving and selling humans for generations before they started in on the traditionally Arabic trade routes of Africa.

I think that the point is that people spew BS about things that they really do not know the true facts. While another bunch of fools then jump on the false bandwagon. Just look at what the Democrat party is spewing and the fools following the con artists, there is a sucker born every minute. Like republicans are bigot racists and the democrats aren't, just about the reverse of the truth. The republicans treat dumb stupid blacks the same as dumb stupid whites. When you are dumb and stupid your are dumb and stupid no matter what color you claim to be, because color will not get rid of your dumb stupidity.
