Default Half the jobs in the USA pay less than $18 an hour

Version that gets around the dumb paywall:

https://outline.com/KzbKYy

It’s a painful reality of today’s economy. Jobs are plentiful, but jobs with good wages aren’t, leaving many working long hours or multiple jobs but still barely scraping by.
Half of the jobs in America currently pay less than $18 an hour, according to Labor Department data. That’s about $37,000 a year if someone works full-time. Forty percent of jobs in the country pay less than $15.50, according to the left-leaning Economic Policy Institute. There’s always debate about what constitutes a “good-paying job,” but it’s notable that manufacturing jobs, which President Trump campaigned on bringing back, pay over $20.50 an hour, on average.
“I believe wages will start going up,” Trump said three times during his Tuesday rally in Arizona, drawing loud applause from the crowd. “We now have the lowest unemployment rate we’ve had in 17 years, so you’re going to see wages go up, right?”

It’s not so simple. Economists are stumped at how unemployment can be so low — 4.3 percent nationally and a mere 2.8 percent in Millikan’s home county — and so many CEOs complain they can’t get enough good workers, yet wages are barely rising. Some blame robots and overseas outsourcing for keeping wages low. Others say the labor market really isn’t as “tight” as it appears, since many Americans in their prime working years have given up looking for jobs.

Median household income, a good gauge of middle-class pay, peaked in 1999 under President Bill Clinton, according to census data. In the nearly two decades since then, households have seen their modest gains eaten away by inflation.
Critics fear that the Trump tax cuts will end up benefiting only the wealthy. Inequality in America is at the levels of the 1920s, largely thanks to the stock market surge.
Getting wages up is the unfinished business of this economic recovery. It will be a defining test for President Trump. His two predecessors — George W. Bush and Barack Obama — were not able to lift wages substantially.

Guess democrats will push for minimum 20 dollars an hour? Then raise everyones property taxes, income taxes, car registrations, tolls, etc

No wonder so many low income folks stay on welfare and drive uninsured unregistered cars.....

$18 is way better than zero dollars.

Jobs give people a purpose. Much better than what the previous President zero did.

So just ANOTHER GREAT REASON to shut the border and cut immigration to a bare minimum.

Wages will then have to go up !

Why do you post something like this without comment? What do you think about it? I assume you think it’s bad. Why?

PDid you said today something to the extent that you don't side or defend any party. then why is every single source of yours have left leaning or extreme left bias? cvil liberties are out the window with you so that eliminates libertarian. your constant use of the term "conservative" rules out anything to the right. that leaves only a few choices. liberal, progressive democrat socialist, socialist or communist? where are you in the spectrum?

If a person gets a degree that only qualifies them to write names on a cup at Starbucks that is on them. I guarantee that plumbers, electricians, welders, and carpenters make more than $18 an hour and many make twice that.

which would be fine if dem taxes on everything didn't eat into that pay.
which could be higher if so many illegals did not accept low wage
and keep business from having to pay more.
even though labor is not thought of as a commodity,
supply and demand of workers affects wages.
good wages are paid in good industry.
which greenies ran out of America.
a full time job with bennies beats a part time one at the same pay
without them.

so just what happen to you pdiddle?
did a pub smack you?
did they do something to your family or friends?

what drives this hate of cons that you claim to be?

Holy crap, what a misleading statistic. 1999 was the peak of MEDIAN income because of the friggin' DOT COM BUBBLE.

The right measurement of income is to look at more than just the median, which is the center of the income range at any one time. If a large sector of people were making a lot of money off of the Dot Com bubble, then of course the median is going to appear to be higher. But it was completely fake, nothing but hot gas, and certainly nothing to use as a baseline for normal economic activity.

Critics fear that the Trump tax cuts will end up benefiting only the wealthy. Inequality in America is at the levels of the 1920s, largely thanks to the stock market surge.
Oh for fk sake. What is the measure of "inequality" in wealth? Is it bad that people are doing well in the stock market? And why does that have a damn thing to do with people who are not in the market?

It's irrelevant what other people make, and how they make it. The relevant question is if the economy is growing, and it is... like gangbusters. Don't want to be on the bottom? IMPROVE YOUR SKILLS AND FIND ANOTHER PATH.

Good god, Lefties are a bunch of whiny little *****. If the economy is slow, it's the fault of evil Republicans and big business. If the economy is booming, only big business and rich Republicans are benefiting.

Jeebus.... STFU and get to work.

Why anyone believes anything that comes from the Washington ComPost is beyond me.

Half of the jobs in America currently pay less than $18 an hour,

Which equates to half the citizens in America are too stupid to be worth even half that pay.

Stupid don't pay well.

This. And as I mentioned above, stupid don't pay well.

And stupid people don't deserve equality when it comes to the corporate pay scale.

Stupid gets minimum wage or less.

Cant find people. too many idiot parents convinced their kids that college is the key to success, and kids got brainwashed by idiot professors. my top employees the last few years made well above 100k.
