I am new to this forum, and don't know much about Corvettes, other than how much I've always liked them. Recently, I found a photo of the 'one that got away.' A C2 convertible with an aftermarket body kit, and if I remember right, a small block 400 under the hood. This was in Santa Barbara in 1984, and it was 12 grand. It was gone before I could pull together the money. It was a great test ride, burned rubber in all four gears, and one of the best looking cars I've ever seen. I don't want to cause any offense to the purists, but I'm very curious about the bodywork which I really love, and would love to hear from anyone familiar with it. Could you still find it today? What would it cost? Also, I love those rims, but they'd probably be hard to find these days. I don't think there's any way to tell from the photo what year the vette was, and I don't remember. Too bad. My '65 has what's called 70's Trans America flares...kind of straight at the bottoms. I haven't seen another one like these in the forum, but the smoother contoured flares look real good to me too. The parking lights are in the grill. Adding the bumpers minus the license plate give it an almost stock look but with a shaved essence.

You mean squared at the top like this ? These were made by an outfit called Thumper Racing back in the early 70's. Legal for SCCA production racing as they had the same size opening as a stock Corvette.

Jim Lots of great cars posted here but you've all got common knowledge I don't. What I'm getting is that there were a lot of body shops, and putting flares on was done a lot in the 70's, everywhere, and there weren't just a few body kits that were popular (and for sure no longer available now). I have pics of mine from '71...and they were on there then. If I ever paint it...they will definitely remain!
In fact, I've had 3 different folks take measurements off mine and add them to their midyears in the last 5 years. Who would have thought anyone would ever be ADDING flares to a midyear?? I've said it before...but I sure like the way those flares and wheels on Sky65 look!! JIM |

Interesting that the original car pictured in this thread has the SCCA legal "square" flares in front and "round" ones in back. Maybe an earlier owner crunched the car and found a front clip already equipped with the squares, thus the mismatch?
Larry Shinoda and Bill Mitchell lifted the tight fenders from the original skinny=tored 1959 Sting Ray race/show car for the production C2. I think Zora wanted flares from about '64 on. He finally got them in 1968. |
I still would like to know how one would get that body work today. Most mid years I've seen on this board and ebay have stock bodywork, so how would one do it? Take it to a specialist body shop where they build it there, essentially a custom build? Or are there places with aftermarket panels available? Or, did there used to be aftermarket panels but they're all long since gone?
And, what would it cost? Many thanks. I can't afford to build my dream ride now, but knowing rough numbers would be great. |

I have gtscustoms flared rear quarters which maintain the original body line but are 1" wider. here are a couple pics from yesterday, first time i have seen my car since it got back from body/paint!
