They did not test a four year old car. The laguna lap time comparison numbers were from numerous tests they have done over the years. (apples to oranges if you ask me) Clicking on each car takes you to a segment from the original article. And yes, that is what they wrote about the Z06 back when it was new. How they could say that tires don't matter when they are the single most important aspect of the car and other cars like the gt3 and acr are running R compounds is ridiculous.

They did not say how many miles on the Z06 and on the F1 tires, If the car hand a lot of miles on it then suspension my be soft, If the miles are high on the F1 Run Craps they will not handled very will. Change the tires, check the suspension set up and I bet the Z06 would do a lot better. I would not give up my 06-Z06 of any of the other cars.:thumbs::D

It's really funny that only 3 years ago this car was the fastest of all... could out drive the best, but of course now it's the one of the slowest.

All BS, and all subjective since none of them can drive worth a damn. Just like some of those 1/4 mile tests where the unexperienced driver could only must mid to low 12's when every professional driver was cracking mid 11's.

I think it shows just how GREAT the Z06 was when it debuted. All the cars ahead of the 2006 Z06 are newer (2 are Viper ACR's, 1 is the ZR1).

We all knew the Z06 would be surpassed but for the oldest car in the test, I think it's lap time has held up extremely well.

Too bad they haven't had the time to test a 2008+ Z06, be interesting to see if a newer Z06 would be able to shave off a bit more time from the lap set in 2006 with the steering and suspension changes that GM has done since 06

Took a friend for a "spirited drive" the other day...she said it was the fasted car she's ever been in including an unknown make of Lambo and Viper...guess her drive in those cars were not as "spirited."

You have to be kidding. Those 2008 changes are mouse nuts compared to putting on a good set of tires.

On a Zo6 the Michelin PSC's should be good for 2-3 seconds at Laguna over the F1's. Coil-overs and sways should be good for another 2-3 seconds. That is if you have a real hot shoe testing it. Must have been a pretty hot driver to get a 1:40.92 in that original test - that is a very respectable time for a totally stock Z06 including run-crap tires.

The Viper ACR time of 1:33.9 is smoking if it was stock off the show room floor!

The top 3 cars I would say are faster than the Z - like someone mentioned 2 are ACR Vipers on Michelin Sport Cups (what did they do to the 2010 - seems like it picked up a bit of time over the 08 version) and the other is the ZR1. The next 6 cars are separated by 1.5 seconds on about a 1:40 track. I would say you can chalk that up to variations in weather, driver (even if it is the same driver, there is still some variation) and possibly track conditions.

It would be a little more significant if the cars were all tested the same day (and they were all in the same condition - no testing old cars with worn tires etc). And we all know that the ZR1 and Z06 are just a good set of tires and a few suspension tweaks away from being top contenders. The Vipers on the other hand are basically track prepped - as long as the adjustable shocks are where they need to be.

You have to take all printed publications with a grain of salt. They're entertaining but not exactly what I consider accurate performance benchmark sources.

I totally realize this, still the changes "may" have been enough to save a little time -perhaps just less then a second.....but the point of my post was that it might leapfrog a couple newer cars in the process which are very close.

This is the problem though, the Viper ACR comes with this stuff stock, the better tires and adjustable suspension are awesome features to have that've lead to Vipers holding these lap records.

GM should offer a hardcore package, but the ZR1 was designed to be a comfortable supercar offering alot of luxurious options, it gives up absolute performance for heated seats, a leather wrapped interior, and runflat tires.

The Viper ACR is much more of a street legal racecar then the Z06/ZR1 ever will be in current production.

Not really fair to compare modded Z06/ZR1 to a stock oem offering imo. GM should up it's game and offer a "track" tire choice as most other car companies do.

I know it's not fair to compare stock vs modded - that's why I mentioned that people in the know will take the tires/suspension differences between the ACR and all other cars into consideration (same with the GT3RS and other street legal race cars). It's up to the magazines to mention that stuff but they rarely do (especially when it comes to streetability and maintenance costs - those MPSC's are not going to last long and Tirerack shows the ACR tires at $331/$550 each versus $352/$365 for our OEM tires).

It would be interesting if GM released a 1LE Camaro type Corvette in both the Z06 and ZR1. Both of them off the bare bones 1LZ and 1ZR should make great track baseline and should do very well in the stock classes.

As always it's buyer beware - if you buy an ACR because it's fast and think it's going to be a comfortable daily driver, you might be surprised. Not to mention I saved exactly 40k over the least expensive ACR I could find.

Yes it's another mag/rag test to sell copies, but their comments really are not far off for a BONE STOCK 2006 Z06. The shocks, alignment & even tires aren't the greatest. Just do a good (non factory) alignment & put on fresh (good) tires & I bet the comments would have been much nicer (plus if he had the '08 steering & shock upgrade to improve feel & reduce oversteer).

But I think they're missing the point... I looked at most of the other cars they tested before buying a Z06 for my weekend & track toy. I settled on the Z06 as after much study it really offered a platform that was at the top for a street based track car. Sure, some upgrades are necessary, but every one of these cars will require some fine tuning to the driver's style & for track durability.

With a 2cd set of wheels & MPSC's, shocks and alignment, I've been faster at every track event I've ever been at than other ACR's, GT3's, and GTR's who ran with me. And never had a reliability problem to boot... yes I do run good oil & upgraded the oil tank for peace of mind. The times I usually run at Thunderhill (and I drive there since my car is barely modified) are within 1 second of recent full out qualifying times for a racer spec GT3-RS with pro driver.

Who says the Z06 isn't a great track car?!?!

I admit, it's hard to grip z06. I love it though! It has alien power. Like it should not be there.
