maybe we should start a new thread, "Mustang takes out ZR1 one two punch" and see how well it goes over on the Mustang forum...
when i read a post and it starts with, "well i wasn't there but this guy i know, told my friend...." i usually wait to read later what really happened. man this stinks, but glad the owner is ok and hope he has a quick recover of his ZR1... |
I'm sorry to see that. It's sad that we can't take our car to a drag strip and not have insurance - somehow it doesn't feel right that we can do just about any stupid thing we want on the street and we'll be covered, but we try to do the safe thing and are not covered.

A few friends of mine were up at NED that night. Someone put up a few pics on another forum. I was surprised it wasn't posted here yesterday. I was going to post it but out of respect for the owner possibly being a little embarrassed I did not since I do not know the person and I was not there.
From what I know of the story, the driver did wreck down by the traps and there was in fact a mustang that did blow up and dump oil down the track prior to that run. The mess was cleaned up and a few cars ran before the ZR1 ran. Is it possible that not all of the mess was cleaned up? Yes, I suppose that is possible. Now I am not a racer and don't pretend to be a racer, but my best friend who was there that night is in fact a racer, he has a camaro that has run in the 8's, he is a fellow corvette owner, and had gotten to drive a new ZR1 first hand. I repsect his opinion and he wouldn't just make up a story. According to him the driver seemed to be having trouble getting the car to hook and on a previous pass only ran a 14.x and seemed to be having a hard time keeping the car under control. Even he said those cars are animals and when you pull 4th sometimes it just wants to come around. Sometimes it happens in his 03 Z06 and his fathers 07. Not sure why, like i said i don't race mine. I'm not sure what the drivers previous race experience was but people who talked to him prior to the crash said he didn't seem that bad. Maybe it just wasn't his night. None the less, seeing how the accident happened on the track, there is almost 100% chance that insurance won't cover it which is unfortunate. Its a good thing the driver is ok and maybe he can get the car fixed from what I have seen and been told it took some heavy damage. |

A buddy of mine who is friends with the owner informed me that he hit a patch of oil on the track. Unfortunate if that was the case. In any event, insurance will not cover it :ack:

I wonder if the driver of the ZR1 followed ranger's advice and left active handling full on?

Where can we get track insurance?
but as a previous post indicates, not sure about drag-strip coverage... |

One of my worst fears is these guys running these junk cars on the strip, knowing that they are liable to break down and leave oil and antifreeze on the track. |
I would use the oil as an excuse too. That's my story and I'm sticking to it, no matter what eye witness accounts say. :yesnod:

If he's got a lot of history with his insurance company, he'll probably be OK.

That's why I don't think it's worth running the 1/4 unless you and your buddies rent the track for a few hours. Why mix a 120k car with a 5k POS?

Spoke with my friend who is friends with the driver. He was in comp mode.

Ballpark $50,000 is what I was told  Some issues underneath beyond what pics show.
If he hit hard enough to break that rear wheel like that, it's bad underneath. Also, the hood is not sitting right, and that could mean trouble underneath too. :(

Comp mode according to ranger is a bad thing on the drag strip.
I don't even know why they put that in the car. 50 ******g grand for a trip to the track. :( I'd have to go ahead and turn this in to my insurance company. If they told me "no" then I'd be no worse off paying it out of pocket than I otherwise would have been had I not turned it in to them. |
