I figure they have to put down race horses when they can't get up & run and it helps ease the pain. wife asked if I would ever get another dog? I told her not anytime soon.

I don't think you've brought the thread down, I believe you've made us realize how important our dogs, and pets are to all of us. My wife just put her dog down a few months back and it hurts. I also want to let you know we're sorry for your lose, and it takes time to get another part of the family so soon for some.

I feel you pain. I had to burry our Golden of 12 years. Crying while digging a hole is a whole different experience...while holding a flashlight...thinking, "Geez, my neighbors might think this is a episode of the Sapranos."

Thanks that made me laugh. I had the vet take care of her. Been going there for 12 years and I felt she was in good hands. & didn't want to dig a grave and keep the tears going any longer. my wife & I stopped at a bar on the way home & gave her an Irish wake. I think she would have preferred it that way.

Wish I took my chocolate lab for a ride in the vette, she loved to go for car rides but she was a little to big for the vette. I had to put her down last night and its like we lost one of the family. But before we went to the vet I took her for a ride to the beach & took her down to the water for one last time. She couldn't stand so I had to put a towel under her back legs. Travis was a great dog, 13years old & never bite anyone until last night. She went out tough as nails and bite the vet when he was trying to give her the shot (not hard and didn't break skin but just enough to make him back off). I was holding her around the neck & said to her "easy girl it will be ok", damn if she didn't give me a lick on the cheek and let the Dr. give her the shot. Then I did something I didn't think I would do. At 6'2" 215lbs I cried like a baby holding her to the end. I hope its true that all dogs go to heaven. :sadangel:

So sorry for you loss:sadangel: I think Will Rogers said it best a long time ago..... "If there aren't dogs in heaven, then when I die I want to go where they went"

I'm with Will Rogers on that statement 100%.

Sorry Jim79 for your loss, we've also lost 4 here in the last 4 years, one being my brothers dog Freddy (my avitar pic) he was like one of my own. I cared for him his last 5 months and spoiled him rotten during that time, he was pretty sick. I still drive 22 miles daily to walk his surviving brother that my Mom adopted now.
It takes awhile to heal, the guilt, hurting, crying, missing them etc...

When your ready get another dog definatly, there's to many in shelters and could use someone like you and your wife to give them a great family life, or where ever you might choose to get one. Your not replacing her, your giving another a good home when and if you do.

:iagree: Having gone through this also (it's hard to keep the eyes dry) the next one NEVER replaces the last one. You are giving another one a great family life and you are not depriving yourself the joy and comfort they provide. Unconditional love.

When we had to let our 14 year old Gordon Setter/Mix go a few years ago, it ruined our lives as we have no children, and it is one of the hardest things in life to do. We knew that the only way to help ease the pain was to get another dog. Well, we pretty much decided on a Gordon Setter, and they are kind of like classic Corvettes - pretty rare and hard to find just the right one. It took about six weeks of searching all over the country and finally found the girl pictured in my post above. She actually came from your neck of the woods - Famingdale, NJ.

And Jims79, it's OK for men with Corvettes to cry. I suggest you start looking for another dog - just looking will help ease the pain. You'll never be able to replace your old companion, but you will be able to add to your memories with a new one.

:iagree: I just put my 8yr old Am Staff down 2 weeks ago, it really hurts because I had to put my other Am Staff down exactly 1 yr ago at age 10. To make things even worse, my Mom passed away this week as well. It's been lonely without her and today I went and bought a 10 week old Am Staff puppy. He does not replace my other dog by any means but it does help to ease the pain of your loss, and it feels good knowing that your'e providing another dog a great life while they provide you with lots of smiles and unconditional love.

Hardly a day goes by I don't say (with apologies to Rudyard Kipling),

"You're a better dog than I, Gunga Ace."

Life without our companions pure & true would be so much emptier. Love 'em while they're here, and learn from them what we can, in the brief time we're allowed to share.

John
