The engine looks great and I know it feels great to do it yourself. I do have a question. Why didn't you use any studs in that engine? I am interested because this engine has numerous high dollar parts and yet no studs. This in no way should be taken as a flame, it's all in the name of education. Thanks.

Re: THE 434ci Motor is TOGETHER! (ANTI VENOM)

IF YOU PUT HEAD STUDS IN THEN YOU MIGHT BE PULLING THE MOTOR IF A HEAD GASKET LETS GO
THE HEADS WILL NOT CLEAR COMING OFF THE CAR AROUND THE STUDS

[SNIP]

You could add another plus for the short rod.
3. short rod = more dwell time near BDC, which increases DCR and provides more torque.

I think your going to have a interesting and great combo Ski. [/SNIP]

I thought it was the other way round.

Re: THE 434ci Motor is TOGETHER! (JAKE)

Yea Jake, I just had to throw that one in.
I was reading on some website that with all other things being equal lengthining the rod decreases DCR and shortening the rod increases DCR. At that time it didn't make since to me so I ran the numbers on a spreadsheet and shure enough a long rod has a long dwell at TDC and short dwell at BDC while the short rod has a short dwell at TDC and long dwell at BDC. This consumption of a weeks worth of spare time showed me that at 10:1 SCR and changing from a 5.7 rod to a 6.125 rod you will loose about .05 in your DCR. Advance/Retarding the cam has a much greater effect that rod length on DCR. Just reaching for another benifit of using short rods. :D

Guys.

Sorry I did not have more time to answer questions. Corky picked up a few of them for me. I have been garsh aweful busy at home and Work. Sorry.

Would have liked to use studs, but as corky said, it may have opened a whole can of worms I was not willing to risk. Especially without being able to see how the motor sits in the car etc.

How about the valve cover questions - adding oil and crankcase venting.

Looking at running a crank evacuation system. Probably down to the headers collectors.

Ever think about playing with an electric crank case evac pump? A lot of newer cars use electric pumps for emissions, I think anyone of them could be made to evac the case. I've been meaning to rig one myself, but it's been such a low priority.

That'll call for drilling holes in the valve covers. You could use the same holes to add oil, but without the holes, you'll be looking at pulling a valve cover every time you want to add/change oil.

Of course you could have drilled and tapped the boss at the front of the block for adding oil,(like very early SBs had) but now that the engine's together, it's too late for that route.

I don't think the covers will clear the wiper motor either in an 89; ours didn't. Had to have them cut and re-welded to create a notch. I think George West had the same clearance problem too and had to have his cut.

the cover clearance problem will depend on what heads you are useing also

Re: THE 434ci Motor is TOGETHER! (ski_dwn_it)

How can that engine make that much power? Ive read about 406 EFI engines making about 500-525hp, but just increasing the displacement by 28cid would it really increases the power 100+hp?

Anyway that crank looks so massive in the block, killer engine.

But are you going to still use the 700r4? Solid axel swap in the future? Kinda like Hoovers 8sec big block or something? Good luck

Re: THE 434ci Motor is TOGETHER! (CORKVETTE1)

You'll also need to check the clearance on the other side of the engine at the A/C box.

We had to modify the A/C box too in order to add/remove the tall valve covers. I don't think the 89 is much different than the 1986 in that area so you'll probably have the same clearance issues to deal with.

Re: THE 434ci Motor is TOGETHER! (Light84vette)

Light84,

434CI motor is HUGE for a sbc. 620-640 hp from a well setup 434 is not unheard of. With more compression and bigger cam, 700hp would not be unheard of.

The crank on that motor is 4.0" stroke. Slap on some killer heads and 100hp is not unheard of. OUr 406s with little 190cc heads flowing 260CFM, made ~540fwhp. These 434s with these 227cc heads flowing 307CFM can in theory at 2hp per 1 CFM make 94 more HP, then slap in the added cubes and there you go. Estimates that will be much higher than I quoted. But we are trying to be conservative with our hp and ET estimates.

Its all about getting air into the motor.

THE 434ci Motor is TOGETHER!

Jesse is right.

My friend's Lingenfelter done 434 has a "mild" mech roller cam 236/244 605 590 cam with the 18* heads and a similar intake to what Jesse and Corky intend to use this year. This particular engine is "De-Tuned" to be streetable and it still makes 640 crank hp. With more cam and a looser convertor, possibly more compression, it'd be scary to think of what the engine makes. As is, it's a monster on the street.

I like the sound of 434 anyway! :)

  HOLY S H I T, Jesse your the man. That is just insane, 600HP detuned for the street and an extra 100HP on top of 540. What kind of money did it cost you to get the block + rotating assembly to get to 434. Plus will you be using the hooker super comps or going with a larger size maybe 1 7/8 inch or something?

Is that thing even smog legal still? 7.1L's of maddness :yesnod:

Light84,

Rule #1: Never add up all the receipts while doing one of these buildups. :nono: Just guestimate what it will cost and pray to god their is enough to finish it and the wife never finds out what it truely costs.

Just to give you an idea, and to make myself sick I will list just a few:

. Dart Block ~2K
. M2 Heads ~2.3k
. Crower Connecting Rods ~1.2k
. Crank ~.8k
. Pistons ~.8k`
. Oil Pan~.35k
. CSI water pump .25k
. Cam ~.3k

OK starting to make myself sick....get the picture? That is basically just the big items. Now add another 5k for all the incidentals...gaskets, RRs, lifters, PRs, Ignition, FLex Plate, machine work, etc etc etc.... :cry

But it sure is fun

Preach it brother,,,preach it! :D  :seeya I would pobably need an ambulance if I added up what #2,#3 & #4 put me over "budget"! The ambulance would be for the heart attack or the "beat down" that the wife would administer! :mad :U :leaving:

Yeah I should have just asked you for the crank/block/heads value, not everything else b/c when I did the 406 and th400 swap, man I had 8K in the bank now IM broke and the engine I didnt even pay for.
