Congrats on becoming a vendor Jon!

After hearing this setup on your car the other day I don't think I'll be able to resist for too long. Absolutely sick at WOT. Didn't think it would be that crazy considering how tame it was at idle/cruising. I must have a set soon! :)

Pricing hasn't been confirmed yet but you can be assured it will also beat the Vette tax and be very reasonable! :smash:

A lot of people are saying they sound like a mixture between the Corsa and Borla. I have them on my car but the car has headers and a cam so it's hard to compare to sound to other catbacks but I will say it sounds SICK and I get compliments everywhere I go. Once a few more people get the set-up and can hear it in person I think they will love the tone! PM coming!

i heard both cptinjak and supermans cars last night... both sound badass... this will be the exhaust i put on when i get a vette sometime this summer

I asked the design team and was told that these were modeled after the stock cans but are straight-through internally. They also indicated that the 321 SS itself creates a deeper tone then the typical 304 used in most other systems. the initial chamber design offered no appreciatable resonnance while making for a nice quite but deep idle, under WOT the system is significantly louder. :smash:

They are very subdue at idle/ cruise with 0 drone on the highway, but damn when you get on it, it sounds INSANE. Ill post up some quick vids when youtube finishes whatever they are doing lol. I would guess in the range of to $675 shipped, but if the interest keeps flowing, the price may stay the same unless the price of materials goes up in that time

Is 2.5" stock for the LS1 (98')? Do you have an X pipe to go with it? (no headers in Cali). The post with the H pipe definatly has the motorboat sound at idle.

We have a catted X-pipe coming out with our longtubes. Other than that no X-pipe only from XSPower. Should mate up to all other X-pipes however pending they mate to a stock exhaust.... :smash:

It will not, sorry. You would have to modify where the tips come out of the mufflers and lengthen them to fit.

Superman09 04-30-2010 09:48 AM

Back up! Still have some sets left!

tbiker99 04-30-2010 01:48 PM

Recieved my exhaust only 4 days after payment. It was packed very well and the system looks like it is well built. I am looking forward to a live sound check. I'll post up a full review after I install it. Hopefully this weekend.

96ss1762 04-30-2010 02:25 PM

Can you post pics of inside the muffler. Is there any packing or is it more of a corsa style muffler

tbiker99 04-30-2010 05:01 PM

Too late to post a pic of the inside. I got'm mounted. Sound great. A raw sound at idle, kind of like having cam and headers, but not quite that good. Under acceleration, they are mean sounding. At steady throttle you almost can't hear them inside. Haven't had them up to interstate speed. At 45 (window open) in 4th gear they sound real mellow, in 5th their very quiet.
They do gurgle when you let off the throttle 1800+/- rpms. You don't hear gurgling above 2k rpms.

As for muffler construction, the inlet side looks like a straight pipe from one end of the muffler to the back side. (just like looking down a pipe with a "U" turn on the far end, no baffles. I stuck a mirror down to try to look at the outlet side, and all I could see is what looked like a flat piece with a hole or two in it. I haven't looked inside of any of the other systems.

If your a profectionist this may not be for you. The tips on the two mufflers aren't perfectly spaced, the right 2 tips are closer together then the left 2. Probably 1/8" difference. Not huge. But they all seam to be level. The pics on the first post are very accurate.
As for performance, they weigh about the same as stock, so you won't gain any weight advantages. There is less engine braking then the stock exhaust, so I would guess that they flow better.

I don't have the ability to take videos, but I can say that I am very happy. It's got a distinguishable growl at idle, barks when you ask, and tame when you cruising, I think the wind might even be louder then the exhaust on the road. Might be the perfect exhaust for someone who wants more then stock but yet does a fair amount of driving. I am pretty sure my neighbors won't be upset at 6am when I head to work. But if you live near an interstate on-ramp, I'll appoligize now, cause they sound sweet at WOT! previously posted videos are quite accurate.

Thank you very much for the nice review! We will be checking into adjusting the tips for the next production run to get them PERFECT :smash: However as you stated and I feel, the slight difference is not really detectable to anyone but the owner of the car unless someone is hunching down checking specs of the car with a fine tooth comb   Thanks again, I really appreciate it!

cjflinders 04-30-2010 07:32 PM

Just installed them today along with a wcc xpipe. Perfect compromise for someone who doesnt want to be loud all the time. Really civil at idle and cruising speed. Very aggressive at wot. This is exactly what I was looking for.

Funny story with the install today, put everything on and tightened the clamps the best we could. Took it out for a drive when someone told me that I was about to lose a muffler. Pulled into a parking lot, vette went one way, muffler and tips went the other. We couldn't get it tight enough so we ended up doing a little spot welding. I couldn't be happier with my purchase, thanks alot.

VTX DOUG 05-01-2010 12:31 AM

Last night I installed my new XSPower 2 1/2" axel backs. Now it sounds like a vette should. It took me just over 2 hours (most of that was unwarpping them) great quality. I had an issue with the clamps not holding them in position but cured that today with some heavy duty clamps (3/8" dia U bolts) from Car Quest about $4.50 for two. I couldn't be more pleased with the sound - very mellow when curising with no drone at all and turning heads when you get on it. Anyone thinking of an axel back system these are worth checking out. Anyone in the San Diego area that would like to here them in person let me know my 98 vette is box stock right down to the paper air filter (soon to be corrected). My gas milage is going to suck - I can't keep my foot out of it now.

Yes, my car has a stock exhaust except for the new XS power axle back system. Additionally it has a stock intake, stock cams, stock everything.

Glad people posted up about the clamps, I'll double check those before I drive any further.

tstar 05-01-2010 04:45 AM

Yeah it's interesting that the clamps are not holding all of a sudden. It seems that the first 8 or so had no issues. This is a brand new system and I believe the only one using SUS 321 so a few growing pains are to be expected I suppose...

321 is VERY tough compared to 304. I would try a Breaker bar on the supplied clamps if you can. I used SS Stepped band clamps on their Headers and they are holding very well...

So how is the infamous "motorboat gurgle" from the stock H pipe with these???

Tim

Every car has a certain sound. My wife's mustang sounds great, but almost any car guy could tell it's a mustang without looking. The motorboat gurgle is part of having the vette. This exhaust doesn't hide that sound. I like the lope of big cam, clacking of a diesel motor, the Potato-potato sound of my ol' Harley, and I am learning to appreciate the corvette gurgle.

The video posted by KC-Griz, is very accurate both in tone and sense of volume. Mine sounds very much like that one.

kc-griz 05-01-2010 10:30 AM

It's been a week now since installing the XSPower cat backs and I've had a chance to drive it around town and on the highway up to 75 or so both with the top up and down.

Overall, I am very pleased with fit and finish of the system. The welds look uniform, solid and consistent. They installed much easier than I had anticipated. Even a novice can uninstall the stock exhaust and install these in about 2hrs or less. While I had a lift accessible to me, the timing was off and I was impatient so I simply raised the car on ramps and did the install off the ground. Still, less than 2hrs for the cat back. I did not install a header setup or X pipe and kept the stock H pipe setup.

The sound at idle does have a "motorboat" sound but I'm not picky about that at all. It's still MUCH better than stock. Gentle acceleration from a stop sounds loud but not obnoxious. WOT from a stop and at speed does make them wake up and do some talking! There is absolutely no drone at highway speed with the top up or down and I'd say they are just about the same as stock in loudness at highway speed. It's amazing how quiet they are cruising at 70. I'm very pleased with with that as we are planning a 3k mile trip in a week or so.

As a bonus, it has appeared that we have gained a slight mileage increase in gas consumption as well. About 2-3mpg combination town/highway. We'll see how it's affected when strictly on the highway from tank to tank. Certainly happy about that! That means they'll eventually "pay for themselves". :D

Only one downside I have encountered. As mentioned above, the U-bolts just don't seem to have the ability to keep the tailpipes from slipping out of alignment. It's been a little irritating and I've considered a couple solutions. A: JB weld the inside of the slip joint then clamp, B: TIG weld the joint either completely and get rid of the clamp or spot weld and use the clamp, or C: drill a hole in the joint and install a #10 or larger SS screw and still use the clamp. I guess the polished SS pipes just don't afford enough friction to overcome the torque from the weight of the back of the muffler and the 90 deg elbow going into it. Perhaps having the finish scuffed up to a matte surface inside the sleeve and outside the pipe would help or maybe having a "key" crimped in it but the latter would reduce the ability to fine tune alignment. Not sure how I'm going to proceed yet but it has to be addressed. Certainly don't want a departing muffler while on the road!

I'd like to get rid of the U-bolts altogether and just have it tig welded and it may come to that. Finding someone who can do that on the car and do a good job is becoming a bit of a challenge though.

For those on a budget or just someone who simply wants a great deal, I can't recommend these enough for an upgrade over the stock pipes.

I plan on placing an order when I got back from vacation later this month. I have an 03Z with heads, cam, long tubes, and 4.10s, right now I am using the Borla XR1. It MUST go asap, the drone at 2k rpm (70mph) is enough to make my head explode, and I am on the interstate every day (to and from work and my gf's house) and cruise regularly right around 70mph.

I want something that has a nice noticeable and mean growl at idle (with my cam), no drone at highway speeds (60-75mph) and very agressive at WOT.

Anyone install this exhaust onto a cammed vette yet? I am very anxious to hear the idle.

Morning bump!

GM Fan 05-06-2010 09:05 PM

Just wanted to update that I received my exhaust Wednesday, believe I sent in the order on Sunday. So that is some rapid shipping even if it did only go a few states over. The packing job was quite possibly the best packing on anything I've ever received even close to that size, FedEx would have had to try to destroy it to damage the exhaust even a little.

I ripped everything out (leaving my garage looking like 10 kids tore through christmas presents or something) and the fit and finish on the exhaust out of the box looks great. Tips look fantastic, good quality welds, just looks great overall. Really looking forward to getting this installed in the place of my Ti's (Stock 02 Z06).

Hopefully I can get the install done this Saturday provided I can get the rear of the car the necessary 30 or so inches in the air. Believe I've got the necessary equipment lined up. I'll be doing the removal/install on jackstands in my garage and plan to take pics of how to get it lifted/supported that high, etc. I'll probably make a new thread about most of those details.

I also have the part number of a set of gaskets I found today at PepBoys for about $2.50 each for the flanges where the axleback hooks up to the to the stock H-pipe. Looks like they should work quite well but I'll wait until I confirm w/ the actual install before posting that just to make sure I'm not missing something.

Superman09 05-07-2010 09:30 AM

Glad you are happy thus far Ray! I'm sure you will love the sound once the system is installed! Keep us posted on how you like it over the Ti's! Thanks!

Has anyone had these shipped to Canada? What was the additional cost? I'd love to hear them before I buy.

Ok, I got these badboys installed on my stock 02 Z06 today. First just let me say right out of the box, these things sound EPIC, totally awesome.

I have been apprehensive about getting rid of the Ti's, because they do sound good, just too quiet. Let me just urge anyone considering the same swap to go for it. This exhaust sounds amazing. I'm not sure how it compares volume wise to the bullet/borla stinger style catbacks, but don't let the size of the mufflers here fool you, this is not a "mild improvement" and will never be mistaken for stock. It sounds very very mean. I suppose my Z06 has less sound deadening/insulation, but it sounds very aggressive while driving and is very much the exhaust this car has been needing. I started to say it sounds loud but that kinda denotes drone or something. I don't think this drones at all, and sounds great.

The only very minor negative thing I have to say is the two included exhaust clamps were a little on the flimsy side as someone else mentioned, but they are polished/look nice though which is why I imagine they were chosen. I bought some beefier standard ugly clamps from AdvanceAuto for $2.50. No big deal, and the included clamps may have been good enough to do the job. I just prefer to really crank down on clamps, always been paranoid about leaks or stuff coming loose.

Anyway, it's got a very nice, deep yet still kinda exotic sound to it. It burbles some on decel (stock H-pipe and such of course) which I think sounds incredibly awesome. I really couldn't be happier. I have just a couple pics I snapped real quick for now below. I think I may want to adjust the drivers side muffler/tip alignment a bit, looks like it might be angled/lower just a bit compared to the passenger side, but the adjustments are easy to make, being just a two piece kit (per side obviously) it isn't some nightmare to align like I hear some of the other affordable units are with 3 separate pieces.

I also have a crappy video below, please note that the camera I borrowed for this is garbage (glorified digital camera). I hesitate to even post the video, as soon as I rev it just a bit (and these are low revs, 2-3k rpm) it washes out and just didn't record well. The idle sound itself is decent however.

My greasy fingerprints and smudges are showing up on the tips, guess I need to wipe em down. They actually look very nice.

Video Note - CRAP QUALITY AUDIO, ONLY THE IDLE SOUND IS REPRESENTED DECENTLY HERE :

I'll make a separate thread at some point about doing this swap yourself in the garage, but I was surprised at how painless it was. I guess I pysched myself out after reading the threads here about how precarious it was to get the car as high as needed, etc. Total pie as long as you have a set of large jackstands (mine went up to 24" high) and some jacking pucks. You basically just use a wood blocks on top of your jack (my jack lifts to 20" high by itself) under the rear crossmember to get the car up high enough to rest on the jackstands under the two side lift points under the doors, I used a doubledecker hockey puck jacking puck on each side above the jackstand. I had no issues getting the car right around 32" high measured from the ground to the bottom edge of the rear fascia. No trouble at all snaking the stock Ti system out. So if you are apprehensive about doing the swap yourself but have the tools above, don't be, and go for it. With a bit of common sense to make sure you're lifting the car safely, it is no trouble. With a buddy to help I made the swap in 2.5 hours taking my time and that included a trip to the parts store for the clamps.

Edited to Add:
Here is a thread with some pics/thoughts on the removal of the stock system in the garage with jackstands:

Here is another crappy quality recording with the cam strapped to the top of the passenger seat, I intended this to just be some normal acceleration out of my neighborhood but I appear to be shifting around 4k rpm.... oh well that explains my 16 mpg average with this car...

I dropped it in 5th and crusied there around 2k rpm for a few seconds at the end. There is zero drone at any normal cruising rpm, it fact it drops off to very very quiet at cruise, can't hear much of anything at all in the video at that rpm. Yet it still sounds aggressive at idle and sounds like an absolute beast at WOT.

Thank you for the great review! I am VERY happy you are so pleased with the system especially from switching from the Ti's! Thanks again and keep on enjoying!

OK GM Fan has me sold! Thanks for the great review and awesome video's. I really needed a exhaust with no drone while cruising as my Borla Stingers are giving my wife constant headaches when we cruise to the city. I mean of course I love the sound and can bare with the drone but my wife can not no more sooooooo got to make my lady happy. Ordering as of now!

BURTORO 05-09-2010 09:16 AM

I am in Delaware and we have Noise requirement at our state inspections; the car sound has to be less than 96db at 2500 RPM's. I had a similar set-up to yours and tested at 101db and 89db with my stock mufflers. I traded my after market Catback for Z06 Ti; do you know what your car measures with the CAM and LT's?
