What did you drive before your Z???
Hey guys, just wondering what you drove before your Z06???
I traded my 02 Camaro SS for my FRC! Here's a few pics. http://i655.photobucket.com/albums/u...obra/ss008.jpg http://i655.photobucket.com/albums/u...obra/ss015.jpg |
That's a beautiful F-bod, Marty. I hope you kept the HRE wheels! They won't fit your new ride perfectly, but are worth practically zip on a trade.
My previous ride was a slightly modded '01 Cobra. I only had it two years, and made the mistake of driving a C5. Ended up costing me a bundle of cash, and after 8 yrs., no end in sight. |
'95 M3 (203K and still driving it)
'99 Passat 1.8T '94 Acura Integra Coupe '89 Acura Integra Sedan '88 Ford Ranger Supercab 4X4 '72 Mazda RX2 (very modded) '64 Merc Comet (289ci) '74 Mazda Cosmo '65 Ford F150 LB (428 SCJ) '72 Datsun 1600 Roadster. Not counting all the cars over the years for the Wife, and lots of various Bikes too.... |
Well I haven't found my Z yet, but this is what I drove.

Immediately before my Z, I had a 99 Mag Red C5, sold it with 115,000 miles on her. The pic below was the one in the for sale ad. Before that, I had numerous cars, 4 of which were f-bodies. 3 LS1's and 1 LT1. I love my muscle cars.
P.S. Marty Mar, that is a DAMN good looking SS you had. http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k2...3/100_3741.jpg |
I remember racing against RX2's, back in my ITA racing days. The hot ticket was to use the old IMSA cases with the trick ports. Man, those cars would get off the turns like a bullet.. It was cheating, so I had to cheat more too.....
Toy History: BMW 335i Porsche 996 06 C6 Z51 2002 Z06 Porsche 993 Porsche Carrera Porsche 951 I forgot, but Ive had a lot |
|
A 95 Vette w H/C/I etc., still have it. It's been a great car and have over 130k on it.

Nice to see some import guys in here. A lot more here vs the hater pool over in the C4 forums...lol.
I've built custom forced induction systems as my business for about 12 years now. I did a ton of Honda, DSM and Toyota over the years. I organized/organize many import car meets, shows, etc. I have a true love for imports and always will. I still build many for friends, but I will admit, my Z06 is all around the best car yet. I've got a lot of mods, plus an LS7 waiting to go in. She's gonna be wicked. My former rides all consisted of Honda's mostly with a few AWD DSM's thrown in. These were my two most recent Honda's below...both V8 killers all day long. My E85 LS/vtec GT30R Del Sol. Custom fitted and polished NSX brakes, every fabricated piece built by me (mani, breather setup, charge pipes, etc). 11" rotors front and rear, billet suspension, PIC 1 pieces. Car made over 450whp and 380wtq on E85...2480lb car. http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s...C_0141-3-2.jpg http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s..._0151-13-2.jpg http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s...x/DSC00007.jpg http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s..._0020-14-1.jpg http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s...X-web-vers.jpg TWM ITB's, 12:1 cr, Endyn head, ITR tranny, and a ton of other stuff...227whp n/a 2150lb car http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s...40049bca9c.jpg http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s...crx/hbITBS.jpg http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s..._0036-36-1.jpg |
Great rides...It's nice to see some imports.
|
For 20k'ish bucks, the monster that these cars are, I think a lot more import guys are going to be moving this way. I love imports, but the Z06/FRC cars are just a monster platform for the dollar. I can make Honda's fast all day, but the handling/braking/power/reliability balance for the buck is hard to beat with these vettes, I must say.
|
For 15 years prior to my Z06, I had a 1985 300ZX turbo, purchased from my father. Over that time, the car went through 2 clutches, a timing belt, and a few other expensive repairs. I had also put on a cold air intake, HKS catback, and a turbo boost kit. In 2006 when the air condition could not be fixed, because the car was so old, then my dream to have a C5 Z06 was realized. I have had the Z06 for 5+ years and if all goes well, I will make it to my goal of 20 years.

How did you like the Supra?
How does it compare to the Z? Build quality: Supra. Built in mid-90's Japan. Enough said. Japanese manufacturers didn't farm out small parts to China or Mexico. Body gaps are tight and uniform. No squeaks, leaks or rattles, even after many miles. Can't say the same about new Japanese cars, as I feel GM and Ford build cars that give them a run for their money these days. The Supra doors shut with a nice tight *thump* even with the windows down and the top off. I shut the door in my Z06 with the windows down and it sounds more like *tat-tat-tat*. :D Interior finish: Supra. I don't mind the dash/console/etc. layout of the Z06, it is the look and feel of the materials used. Such smooth shiny plastic it is laughable. Am I in a Corvette or a Cavalier? Knobs and switches are typical cheap GM. The Supra knobs and switches feel very...well...Japanese. They feel "heavier" and tighter. Seats aren't even a comparison. The Supra seats weren't the best around, but they were still better than the Z06 seats by a long shot. When you sit in a Supra, it feels like you are in a more expensive car. I do prefer the gauge cluster in the Z06. Much newer look and decent backlighting. The Supra gauges look like they are out of a Camry...well, a 180mph Camry. Comfort: Supra. No surprise, really. It is a 2+2 GT with a back seat. A back seat for a midget, but a back seat. Taller roof with more headroom, softer suspension, and more supportive seats with better padding. Leg room is about equal, and the Supra offers a smidge more room from side to side. Handling: Z06. For some reason, people think Supras don't handle well. I have no idea who started that crap. MKIVs handle very, very well. They pulled like .98g back in 1993 on all-season Michelins. They are rare cars, so not many are seen on roadcourses. However, the guys who do road race do very well. The old C5Z is tough to beat, though. Lighter weight, stiffer frame and body, lower center of gravity, 50/50 weight distribution. I know my Z feels a lot tighter in the twisties than my Supra did. Braking: Tie. Hard to tell without doing a true side-by-side comparison. The Supras had incredible brakes for the day. 12.8" rotors, 4-piston calipers front and 2-piston rear. The rotors were thick, too. Hard to get them to fade. We all know how well C5Zs can brake, though. Those little brakes do a damned good job. Mine stops harder than I will ever need it to, unless I decide to flog it on a roadcourse. Tires usually dictate stopping distance, anyway. Power/dollar ratio: Tie. This is such a tough comparison. Both cars can run low 11-second ETs with bolt-ons. Both can run frickin' 8-second ETs if you dump a fortune into them. Too many variables and possible combos. Not worth comparing, really. Speed is just a question of how much you can afford. Reliability: Tie. I would normally say the Supra is more reliable, but I personally can't compare them. In 5000+ daily-driven miles, I haven't had one single problem with the Z06. Maybe long-term I will start seeing the usual C5 trouble issues, but I haven't yet. Durability: Supra. The Supra was really over-built from the factory. The wonderful 2JZ inline-6 is a beast. 600-700rwhp on a stock longblock is the norm, and will handle that power level all day while still idling like a Lexus. The only non-Japanese part on the car is the Germany-sourced Getrag 6-speed. Guys have run 7-second ETs (yes) on 100% OEM Getrags. Nobody else can claim that. Nobody. The OEM IRS is used in multiple 8-second and a couple 7-second cars. These cars are tanks, period. With the Z06, at 600-700rwhp levels, you better have a built engine, built trans, and a built rear. Grins per mile: Tie. I got tons of stares and shouts in the Supra, but I get daily compliments in the Z06. The Supra made cool turbo whooshes and hisses and whistles with that turbocharged shove-in-the-back when the boost came online, but the Z06 has that instant off-idle tire-shredding torque and the exhaust note is hard to beat. I just choose to own both, and I will soon. |

Wow thats quite a change up! I figured most guys had from F body's or muscle cars. It was an easy switch. I allocated $30K to buy a new machine. Then I saw an ad for a '03 Z06 with 6K miles on it two years ago. A little research and I found that buying new and throwing another $10K at it would not be anywhere near the value or performance of the Z. Made the jump in logic and gut feeling. Besides, I have gray hair and all the people in my area that drive Vettes are blue hairs. I qualified. JK |

Agreed. I totally love taking a 1.4 litre four banger to the limit. I've own Japanese cars since 1974. The Z06 is my first domestic. It was an easy switch. I allocated $30K to buy a new machine. It appears everyone except me and TheoZ ('93 Saturn SW2) had cool cars before getting their Z06s. I was driving a total POS bone stock '93 Jetta when I got my C5 Z06. The Z06 was a huge upgrade from the Jetta.

It appears everyone except me and TheoZ ('93 Saturn SW2) had cool cars before getting their Z06s. I was driving a total POS bone stock '93 Jetta when I got my C5 Z06. The Z06 was a huge upgrade from the Jetta.

Like many of you,I owned an F-body,98 Z-28. Very nice ride for the time that I had it. I kinda pushed the timetable up a bit, primarily because of some experiences I had with an unscrupulous speed shop, but in the end,it's all good!!

I have had way too many cars and bikes to list but most recently..... I had this:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...N/000_0902.jpg 99 Trans Am M6, 38k miles, 392rwhp NA, 546rwhp on spray, 9" ford rear Then I sold it for $15k and dumped all of that money (and about another $20k :ack:) to build this: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...t/DSC01597.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...t/DSC01573.jpg And before I got back into cars, I was insanely ate up with fast bikes...>I still have these but since getting the blown Z06 I havent messed with the bikes much this year.. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...a/DSC01455.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...a/DSC01459.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...a/DSC01472.jpg My street rider and drag race/LSR/everything bike....built motor, air to air intercooled stg 2 turbo kit with secondaries/piggy back. 320rwhp(14lbs) on pump gas... 435rwhp(28lbs) on C16. Before my procharged 01 Z, I had a Vortech'd 01 Z. Lol. But before that I had a whippled 03 Cobra and before that I had a Vortech'd 01 mustang Bullitt.

The two that I sold to buy my Z were..
My S2K http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/i...k/DSC00061.jpg and my '66 Sunbeam Tiger with a SB 289 This is the last time I saw it as it went on the boat across the Irish Sea to the UK to it's new owner :( http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/i...s/DSC00564.jpg and the replacement for both of the above :woohoo: http://farm7.staticflickr.com/6044/6...521cf00a_b.jpg |
Awesome thread! You guys have great taste in cars! I just sold my 72K mile 91 300ZX TT, dynoed at 357/385 on pump, and my 35K original mile, 95 AWD Stealth RT/TT, dynoed at 490/449 on pump. Both were awesome cars, but definitely worth selling for my Z!

Another Mustang....2001 GT
This was my 01 Zinc yellow gt, just a 2V 4.6 but sounded great, and was a blast to drive.

My previous car was a 98 Eclipse GSX pushing 400awhp on 91. I completly parted her out to buy my Z. I do miss my DSM. But i don't regret my decision.

I found some pics of a few of them on this computer:

^Your EB Z with the gunmetal wheels just completely changed my mind about that color. I was not a huge fan before hand, but that color/rim combo looks incredible.

It's been just over a week since I bought the Z.
Traded in my '90 Vette for her. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-s...2011.53.24.jpg http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n...o/IMG_3770.jpg She was a great car and I will miss her. Glad I got her out into the mountains before I traded her in; lots of fun taking the twisties. Not counting my daily drivers before that was a 1997 Mitsubishi Eclipse: http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n...0409061839.jpg Before that my college car was a '95 Dodge Neon, a surprisingly fun little car at the time. None of them remained stock. The '90 had most of the bolt-on performance mods you could have. The Eclipse had cams, porting, etc. Neon got a few intake/exhaust upgrades. |
My beloved '69 L-46/M-21 Roadster. Started the resto...then did the math and couldn't make that level of investment :( Hard to see in the pic, but that's it in the background going onto the trailer...

First car was an '88 'Vette; drove the hell out of it for 7 years and sold it after graduating from UGA.
Immediately bought an '06 350Z. Drove it for 6-months and hated it. No torque, clutch sucked, etc. Ended up with the '02 Z that I have now. Absolutely love it. Bought it with 56k miles and it has over 118k on it now. No problems other than regular wear items and a bad SWPS...which has killed my active handling for over two years and still hasn't been replaced. Great car - I can't say enough good things about it. |

wow there has got to be more jeep people out there :( lets see them

I had an 02 EB Z06 that I drove daily until I changed jobs and it required 4.5 hours driving every Friday and Sunday.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3.../Z06Custom.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...00633Small.jpg I made the traded for a GMC Sierra. Rode, drove and served me very nicely but I missed my Z. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...a/DSC03843.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...a/DSC03835.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...a/DSC03833.jpg I missed my EB Z so when my traveling stopped I sold the truck. I then started looking at finding a replacement Z. I found an 02 with 19k miles and picked it up. That is where I am now. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...6/DSC03924.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...6/DSC03919.jpg |
I still have the 911 turbo but it doesn't get much action now.
I'll be putting it back to perfect and selling it. http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fb...type=3&theater https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net...90620166_n.jpg Before that was my much modified Saleen Mustang: http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fb...type=3&theater https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net...49361245_n.jpg |

I'm only 24 (just turned in Dec) - Picked up the Z just last month so I'm brand new to this world.
First fun car: 2005-2009 - 94 Formula Bolt Ons / Lowered / Koni Adjustables https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net...12040_6366.jpg Second fun car 2009-2011: 99 Trans am - Cam / Bolt-ons / Lowered / Koni Adjustables - 412rwhp/418rwtq https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net...51_4477548.jpg and now the Z :) I'll always miss them a little bit but each time it's been a huge step up. I've had Beaters also but they aren't exciting. |
