Anyone else feel the HUD is kind of a waste on this car
Seems like such a shame to take away from the new dash setup. I loved the HUD on my C6, but in retrospect I realize it was partially because I didn't have to look at the Silverado gauges that made me appreciate it.
|
Absolutely not. I love being able to quickly get info without looking away from the road. Plus, the C7 HUD will be much improved over the C6 HUD.
|
I'll have to drive mine a bit before I could render an opinion, but I really don't think so.
|
I wish all vehicles had selectable HUD

Nope, don't believe its a waste on any car. Great tool for SA which, around here, every driver needs... desperately.
|
I find the HUD a great tool- I keep posted speed and my current speed in it and rarely have any need to look at gauges.
|
i just look at the gauges, they are only a few inches lower.
|
Absolutely not!
Have HUDs on all three of our cars, won't buy another without one. (but the C7's is going to put the others to shame) |
No.....
|
I always look at HUD for speed, but for whatever reason never use theHUD tach. It's a nice feature for watching speed
|
Wouldn't have it without the HUD. Had the first HUD on my C5, have it on my C6, and will have it on my C7 as well :-)

It depends on how you have the main display configured. But if you don"t want the HUD, you can choose 1LT, or turn the intensity to zero.

I always viewed it as a gimmick.
If it can't display GPS, it's really not very useful IMO. |
I'm driving for 50 years and by habit I looked at the speedo on my c6, I did use the nav and radio info on that hud and will like it on my C7

My guess is that you can if you want to. Presumably it is very similar to the HUD on my XTS. If you have a nav route running, you can get the relevant information, such as upcoming turns, displayed in the color output of the HUD full time. Or if you don't, it will still 'pop' into the HUD at appropriate times similar to the way warning messages appear in it.

If it can't display GPS, it's really not very useful IMO. But GPS would be an awesome addition, but try it for a while before rejecting it. If anything it keeps me much more honest with speed limits. Also what is great about it you always know where you are in acceleration. You can easily go beyond your intended target between gauge cluster glance downs. Bottom line: You keep your eyes on the road your hands upon the wheel and speedometer displayed before you. Works for me. |
I had HUD on my C5 - loved it.
I do not have it on my C6, I miss it, but not a biggie, turns out I can live without it. Price is the factor for me on this option |
The harder you drive the car, the more valuable the HUD is. You can keep your eyes on the road, and what you are doing. Since the tach is electronic on the dash now, I am expecting the HUD tach to perfectly keep up with engine revs now.
Michael |
Helll no!!!
|
Definitely not a waste. I got used to not looking at the gauges and keeping my speed in check simply by using my peripheral vision.
Looking down at the cluster now seems awful and dangerous now. LOL |
I love the HUD. Looking forward to the new and improved version.
|
You just need to use it to appreciate the HUD.
|
I dearly love being able to see my speed without taking my eyes off the road.

I suspect that anyone that calls it a gimmick either doesn't push their cars, or hasn't driven a car aggressively with a HUD. My C5 had one, my 2 C6s have/had one. As long as GM keeps putting them in Corvettes, I'll keep using them. :) |
The advantage to the Stingray HUD is that you don't have to compromise on the information you can have available to you at any time. The integration of the center screen, the IP and the HUD is much improved over previous generations. You had to choose street mode previously if you wanted turn by turn info on the HUD (and you lost access to other useful vehicle information) and you had to leave your map screen up if you were trying to see surrounding streets relative to your upcoming turn. With the Stingray you can display a small nav window on the IP, have your favorites list up on the audio screen and get your turn by turn on the HUD along with other vehicle information.
On a track or during spirited driving, the HUD is such a useful tool. Critical information in your field of view all the time. |
No way. When you start driving hard you don't have time to look down.
|
No. Wouldn't order one without it. Super thrifty types can always order the 1LT. I've always felt if I can't afford to order a new vette fully loaded with all the top options, I would not buy one until I could. To me it begs the question, what does being a cheap f--- serve, if you are vette junkie, except not getting what you really want. When you were in high school, did you want the hot cheerleader or the one without all the bells & whistles ?
|
Loved it. Best option in my C6s. Every car needs it, IMHO.

Only experienced it in the C5, and that was pretty basic, but I liked having it on. Found the G-sensor to be utterly useless though.

If it can't display GPS, it's really not very useful IMO. The C6 HUD does display some GPS information: next turn direction, street name, and distance to, when in street mode. I have said for years the needle swinging gages are useless. Put the needed real-time information on the HUD and make the dash a configurable display. The C7 finally does that. |
Could live without it. Gimmick. I always use the analog gauges, easier to read quickly. Plus in the summer sun, the HUD can be difficult to see sometimes.
The HUD tach function is to hard to see, ok for MPH readout. |
HUD for speed readouts is very useful IMO.

remember--a bunch of here are old and we have presbyopia (it means we can't see s---t up close without our readers). looking down the road and having to refocus on the dash takes a split second-- that is one split second that might save your life if something real bad happens. I think HUD is the bomb and should be required on all cars....

I thought I couldn't live without HUD before buying my C6. Now I realize I hardly ever look at it, and if I do it's only to look at the GForce which isn't available on the dash otherwise.
|
i like the HUD but.... that g gauge is going to kill me one day.
|
Love the HUD, won't own another Corvette without it.
GM, if you are listening, start offering it on other new cars. |
I wouldn't buy the car without a HUD. Especially a car that encourages speeding. I have this crazy idea that keeping my eyes on the road is a good thing, especially in a race or on a crowded Interstate in the rain. Quaint, I know.

Luv the HUD. Had it first in my 2000 Pontiac Bonnie SSEi and have always had a car with HUD since then...quick, basic info without taking your eyes off the road.
|
I wish my car had it. My gf has a GTP and her HUD is MPH only. I love it! Especially since I have grown comfortable with driving with my steering hand at the top of the wheel...it blocks my view of the speedometer a lot. The HUD is always visible.
|
The HUD is not something that will move me to an 2LT...if it can be added later on a c7 1LT that will be the route ill take...if not..not a big loss...
I did the same on my c6 and its worth the $600 I paid to have it installed but that's about it. |

$57,795 is my target price ...z51 MRC and NPP.....maybe 59,795 if I'm digging the competition seats..
HUD can wait. I tend to pay cash unless interest rates stay at historically low rates... It's free money |

I for one believe the HUD should be standard equipment for all cars. It is an outstanding piece of safety hardware...:yesnod:
|
I like the HUD, and given improvements to it, it should be even more useful.
|
I like it. Yes you can live without it, but why would you want to?

I have no use whatsoever for the HUD. IMO.

No!

if someone got HUD in their car and doesn't want it let me know and I'll take it out and put in the cubby hole instead of the switch :D

My first HUD,.. don't want to drive without one anymore...love it.:yesnod:
|
On dark nights on dimly lit roads, priceless, but I didn't use mine too much. I have it again but probably won't use it much either.

Love the HUD - have the RPMs, speed, and G's in view - makes for some great fun getting on and off interstates!
Darken mirrors for traffic in the rear is great - not blinding light, when no cars I don't care what's behind me! :D |
I don't think it's a waste at all and I love the one I have in my C6 and loved the one I had in my C5 too. But, $ 4,800.00 is a bit too much to pay for one. All the rest of the stuff on the 2LT package is just more stuff that can go wrong.
|
I never use mine. Guess I just grew up looking at gauges.
|
Can anyone take a picture of their HUD!?!?!?!??!?
y'know... like this? https://scontent-b-iad.xx.fbcdn.net/...63355406_n.jpg |
HUD focal point

I display oil temp on the DIC, oil pressure on the HUD and don't pay all that much attention to coolant temp. It takes a finite time for your eyes to adjust from looking at things a long way down the track to focusing them on something about two ft from your face. As you get older the time it takes to refocus going either way gets longer. There is no such thing as a quick glance at the gauges when they are analog, hard to decipher and in a stark shadow. With the race seats in the car I sit low enough that I pretty much look through the HUD like a fighter pilot does. Display isn't quite in focus but close enough to be readable. Would be nice if they made the HUD the same way they made an aircraft HUD so you have to focus at infinity to read it. That would make for a lot better drivers.
Bill I always assumed that, due to liability concerns, a military style HUD would never be available in cars. Someone would claim he was distracted by the display, and sue because he lost his concentration out the window, beyond the HUD. In combat, one doesn't usually get to sue if he has a problem and gets killed because of distractions..... Interesting subject. |
I can't wait to have a HUD in my car.
I've been using my Garmin GPS as a speedo in my current car for a few years now. Just stick it in the corner and it's very accurate to what my car is displaying. Great not having to look down. |

I really like the HUD. Best thing to have on a car. That makes it easier for me to keep my Head Up (I guess that is what it is all about).
|
I really like it - you never have to look down. This one also has several formats, so you can have it as cluttered or simple as you want. It is particularly useful with the shift paddles on the A6 when you are working the twisties because it shows you what gear your in !!
|
What?! No hud for my jet fighter....not on my watch!
|
Hud
In the camp with all cars should have HUD. Have had my C7 for almost two weeks now and just returned from a trip to the Baloon Fest in Albuquerque no car defects or problems. I wish I had a dollar for every time we observed someone taking phone pictures of the car on this trip. Two things that I am disappointed in on the new HUD. No turn signal indicator, no high beam indicator on the HUD. At 6ft 2" I have to peep around the steering wheel to see these. After passing someone it is nice to know if your turn indicator is really off. The same on high beam - are they on when meeting a car at night. Hopefully I have overlooked the setup on this and they really are available?
|
Got to drive a the C7 a tiny bit tonight. The HUD is fantastic on the C7. WAY more clear than the C5 hud I'm used to. And it updates WAY faster. I didn't get a chance to play with it much, but it was certainly something worth checking out if you haven't or you're on the fence about whether you want it or not.
Since I started driving cars without the HUD, I've genuinely missed the Corvettes that much more. I have to look down to check my speed. Up until now, I never realized how distracting and some-what dangerous that actually is. |

Add me to the HUD should be in all cars camp.
I was mad when got my 99 Trans am that it didn't have one and the Grand Prix GTP did. I loved the HUD in my 2008 Z06 that sold this past spring and the new c7 HUD looks greatly improved. I am also bit pissed off that don't have a HUD in my very pricey when new 2007 SL55 and don't see HUD offered in even the newest SL or Porsches nor the Dodge viper which also think should get a HUD. Nor in very many other exotics.. Fact what other cars have HUDS? Its a fighter get type of think and well I admit Top Gun is my favorite movie! |

HUD is great, unless I bought the car for stints in parking lots, chasing dust bunnies. |
Hate driving a car with-out HUD,all cars should have this as standard equip.

My 2002 was without HUD. After 3-4 years, I added the factory HUD. It was cool for about 2 months; but I ended-up not looking at it. Had that C5 for 11 years total; and of the 7 years with the HUD; I mostly looked right past it.
If I was an autocrosser, I imagine it would be helpful. One thing I can say though, it sure helped on resale. Many people looking for a used Corvette (especially those out after their first Corvette)... always asked me if my 2002 (when I had it for sale) had the HUD. . |
I haven't seen my speedo in several cars now due to my driving position and such. Always have to bend down and look around the top of the steering wheel to check my speed. I've never had HUD but I'm looking forward to it just for that simple reason.
