Help, wax not drying, what to do?

Yesterday I attempted to wax my mother's 1974 Mercedes Benz 450SL. It was pretty weird weather wise. Rainy and foggy outside. Inside the garage the floor had lots of condensation, but it was a comfortable temperature. I applied the wax and it did not dry to a haze. I put a dehumidifier in the garage before I went home for the night. This morning, the wax still hadn't dried, so I turned on the heat in the garage, set it to 70° F. What can I do? It's a black car and it look horrible.

Wipe it off?

Dave1 04-04-2015 03:42 PM

You didn't wipe the wax off after you applied it…..?

A day later…..??

Just redo the whole deal when the sun comes out…...

I've tried to wipe it off with 3 different types of towels.

Clean good quality microfiber towels and detail spray.

If it won't come off then I would clay bar to strip off the old wax.

KrisB410 04-04-2015 03:56 PM

No, it just spreads it around.

Thank you. I'll try that.

You must have put way too much

BOTYNV1 04-04-2015 04:28 PM

Angle grinder will cut right through stubborn wax.

C5 Hardtop 04-04-2015 04:32 PM

Turn the car on inside the garage for 1 hour per part humidity. This works. For example, if it is 85% humidity INSIDE the garage, leave the car running for 85 hours.

Have a body shop paint it for you.

Capt Van 04-04-2015 04:36 PM

Wipe down, vigorously with fresh brake fluid.

If your pressed for time, try a heat gun:

When this has happened to me in the past, I resort back to Meguires products for satisfactory results. More than once....

I originally post this in the Off Topic section. It was moved for me.

I'm gonna try to wipe off the wax once more. I went out and got a Mother's Clay Bar kit.

My stepfather took care of all the vehicles, he passed away about a year ago. So I'm kinda new at this.

So I tried Dawn/hot water and it worked.

I'll save the clay bar kit, I'm sure I'll need it in the future.

Guess I'll have to watch some videos on how to do this right.

Wax should be applied as thin as possible, more is not better or longer protection. It is likely just wasted product and often makes it harder to remove. I have seen a damp towel work in a pinch to remove "wet" or "hard" wax to remove.

I would NOT suggest using a dishwashing liquid in car care. I wont get into the argument, but its not worthwhile nor valid. When you want to remove old wax or sealant, use a paint cleansing lotion or polishing.
